Hamer Dave Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 What is your recommendation as a kick ass replacement pickup(s) for a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe's mini humbuckers. I don't want to have to route anything. I saved this guitar from someone wanting to chisel, and put in regular humbuckers! Thanks.
serial Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Old Bill Lawrence 550s!!!I snagged two NOS ones years back to put in my 80 Deluxe, but never installed them. I should have-I really liked that guitar, but the mini hums were TOO clean for my stuff. If I'd have installed them, I'd still have that guitar.
G Man Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 For whatever reason they are not that popular, but the RioGrande Babybucker is a rocking pickup that would sound great in a Deluxe. That or some SD Antiquity II Firebirds.
hamerhead Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Check GFS. They have some great minis. Check their 'Retrotron' page, too.
Hamer Dave Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 Thanks for the ideas. I'll look into some of them. I did get something from GFS, but if I recall it didn't look like it was going to fit, or maybe it was the rings. I can't remember. They may have been for firebird. Been a while. No time for some projects. y'know...
gtone Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 JS (Jon) Moore winds a great pickup at a stellar price (Lollars and Skatterbranes are no slouches either, but very spendy). He can do minis in Firebird or LP Deluxe styles, give you any tone you want (has a great selection of magnets).Check out his website: http://tonefordays.com/He's modding a set of minis for me now as we speak and his full-size buckers are primo, top-drawer stuff.
BadgerDave Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 No one has mentioned Jason Lollar yet? Top of the line, pricey and worth it. I've used the Lawrence 550s and Rio BabyBuckers and agree that they are excellent as well.

Thanks for the recommendation. No probs - good luck!Armitage - get a couple of those Moores in one of your guits man, think you'll enjoy 'em.The man makes his own maple spacers, sources accurate spec wire, quality magnets (great selection), vintage butyrate bobbins (will do dbl cream on fullsize buckers), winds 'em even, uneven, scattered, overwound, underwound, whatever you want or need. All for about $100/pu or less in some cases. Never tried his P90 winds but hear reports that they sound/play insanely good.
Morris Davis Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Tom Holmes Marc Ford mini hums. I have a set in my firebird. They sound like a snarling dog. Just great

That's what's kept me from dropping mini-hums into a Special. The Gibson LP Deluxe's had a bracket, and others screw in directly.

Do mini's in LP Deluxe have threaded bracket for adjustment from screw in ring just like a regular HB? I think I've seen some black ones that do and maybe some bulkier cream ones that don't work like that.
