Quietly Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Firstly as a new member let me say hello and sorry to start so early with questions. I know very little about guitar finishes in terms of woods or types of grains and I have a Talladega being delivered to me hopefully on Thursday. When it arrives I will post up some decent photographs but what appears to be unique about this guitar is that both the top and back have the same finish. My understanding is that normally they have the mahogany back much the same as an LP. This was obviously a special order as not only does it have fret binding, Brazilian rosewood fretboard but also Gibson style inlays, matching headstock but also body binding also on the back of the guitar. This guitar is second hand and described as mint and going by the photographs sent to me it really does appear exceptional however until it gets delivered I have to reserve judgement. Manufactured in 2008 according to the serial number so any information on this Talladager would be appreciated. Here is a picture of the wood on the front and back. On this one you can see the front and back binding. Here is picture of the front of the guitar.
cmatthes Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Your new Talladega is definitely a custom order. The quilt top and back are also upcharges, and I have not seen another Hamer with the finish OVER the body binding. Is that wood "faux binding", like on a PRS, or actual cellulose binding? I can't tell from your pics.

Never owned a Hamer before and this was a little strange as a dealer friend of mine sent me the photographs and the sellers details and asked me to contact the seller direct if I was interested in buying it. I mailed him back and said not really but I would trade a flame topped Gibson LP standard on it but didn't want to insult the seller. End of story is the seller was happy to take the LP in a straight trade and as they say the rest is history.Like I said before I will post up more information and detailed photographs when it arrives. Thanks again.
veatch Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 I think (*think*) i recall seeing that for sale before. An absolutely gorgeous guitar. Unless someone else places a custom order with exactly those specs (unlikely, but possible) you will have a one of a kind instrument. And, Welcome to the forum! Let us know how you like it when you get it.

Let us know how you like it when you get it. Thanks for the welcome. I am not sure where you saw it for sale before but you could well be right, the guitar is coming from the UK. I'm not a collector and have guitars purely for the pleasure of playing them so I am really looking forward to getting my hands on this one. I'll let you all know what I think about it although I am pretty sure I will love it going by what I have managed to find out from here and other places.
bubs_42 Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 It was on Ebay for ever and a day. Very Awsome Guitar!!!
gorch Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 This one looks like a Talladega that I remember being put for sale on ebay several times some while ago. It used to be expensive compared to other used Talladegas put for sale that time period as for the many custom features it had.As far as I remember, the core of the guitar still was made of mahogany. Body and back had a top of the same wood looking just like yours.Whatever you've paid. This one will be a great sounding stunning guitar and a keeper.Welcome to the board Quietly, btw.

When I say traded I mean a straight swap as I wasn't playing the LP that much as I could never really get on with the frets. Thanks for the welcome much appreciated.
specialk Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Gorgeous guitar! Congrats and welcome. Definitely more pics when you get her.
Travis Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 To me it looks like it's unbound and we're just seeing the difference in color between the maple and the mahogany thru the finish. I could be wrong. It still looks like a killer guitar, tho. Enjoy it. I love my Talladega.
Quietly Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 Gorgeous guitar! Congrats and welcome. Definitely more pics when you get her. Thanks for the welcome and yes I will do the full works with photographs when she arrives. To me it looks like it's unbound and we're just seeing the difference in color between the maple and the mahogany thru the finish. I could be wrong. It still looks like a killer guitar, tho. Enjoy it. I love my Talladega. You could well be right Travis as from the top it looks as though there is no binding, we will soon see on Thursday as I have just checked the tracking and its in Paris so will be in Spain tomorrow and out for delivery Thursday. If that is the case I assume then it must have been part of the Custom order as the top binding is standard isn't it? I think this confirms you are spot on
cmatthes Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 That's what I'm thinking - the PRS-ish "faux binding" is what it looks like to me.I couldn't imagine that they would finish over the cellulose binding with a color coat.
zenmindbeginner Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Is that quilted birdseye maple? Definitely faux binding with a heavy amber tint.Has anyone heard Quietly's music from the website in his signature?IT IS PHENOMENAL!Absolutely Bad ass stuff Gerry... WOW!

Well I'm glad that one is sorted and with the prices of PRS's looks like I'm on a winner Is that quilted birdseye maple? Definitely faux binding with a heavy amber tint. Has anyone heard Quietly's music from the website in his signature? IT IS PHENOMENAL! Absolutely Bad ass stuff Gerry... WOW! Thanks for the site visit zenmindbegginer and glad you liked the music. I get so lay back I fall over sometimes LOL First two tracks I played my new Duesenberg on lead so I'm looking forward to doing some work with the Talladega. Boys and their toys Oh and a good question how would you describe that finish?

I get so lay back I fall over sometimes LOL First two tracks I played my new Duesenberg on lead so I'm looking forward to doing some work with the Talladega. Boys and their toys Oh and a good question how would you describe that finish? The ambient tones are really good and remind me of James Calvin Wilsey. Your production quality is top notch with great playing. Killer website too, it's rather clever yet clean and functional. I guess that the quilt isn't bird's eye but it definitely has a unique pattern. Hamer usually lays some sort of a boiled linseed oil like stuff to bring out the chatoyancy of the figuring. Then some clear lacquer coats to seal in the initial oil finish followed by the tinted coats. I've come to learn that Hamer was highly interested in the dazzling light that some wood figuring gives off when viewed from different angles. Double and triple staining tops give the grain more pop like PRS, but also nullifies the chatoyancy. Oil finishes preserve the movement of the grain. So, I guess it's finding a happy medium of popping the grain while simultaneously enhancing it's movement that separates good guitar finishers from great ones.
Quietly Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 Thanks Zen (Hope you don't mind me shortening your name a little) so are we settling on it being Quilt? The production needs to sound reasonable as I have thrown a pile of cash at my bedroom studio over the years so if it doesn't I can't blame the kit. My ears are getting shot and someone once said over a certain age you shouldn't be doing production. It's my hobby and playing the guitar has helped me keep almost sane over the years. Guitars are wonderful places to get lost in and boy do I get lost in mine LOL
specialk Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 so are we settling on it being Quilt?Definitely quilt. As for color, my guess (and that's all it is) would be Amberburst.

Onwards and upwards.
veatch Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 If it's a custom order, you'll likely get the certificate of authenticity with it which will list the details and all custom changes. If you don't get the CoA, no biggie. Call or email Hamer and they'll get the lo-down for you. They're good people. And, i agree, very nice music at your site.

Thanks Veatch I am told all the docs are with it and if they are I will post them up. Thanks also for the visit and listening to some of my tracks, always appreciated.
veatch Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Thanks also for the visit and listening to some of my tracks, always appreciated. If you could, add a "Play All" button that cycles through the tracks. Everything i've listened to was very tasteful, and i wouldn't mind having it looping in the background while i work. Very nice playing and feel.
gorch Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Quietly,I have a Talladega myself and use Thomastik-Infeld Sliders 0.09 gauge strings. According to the songs on your website, I'd like to recommend the strings for your style of playing. The strings ring like a bell. Absolutely amazing.
