Supertramp came up in my YouTube mix
diablo175 replied to Saul Goodman's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I liked Breakfast In America and knew maybe a handful of their songs but they were not a band I would queue up. This song was one of their better offerings. I have a fairly distinct memory of some on the HFC not being particularly fond of Supertramp. I didn't quite understand the hate but that's musical tastes/preferences for ya. -
Stupid question, explain Strat pickup positions to me
diablo175 replied to bry4321's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Yup. That's why I remove 'em Only have my one Strat (what's left of it after numerous mods) w/ a middle p'up. But it's lowered and frankly, "Zza" doesn't get much play time. I modded these Charvel So Cal's to lose their middle p'ups. And yes, I don't spend a lot of time on neck p'up either so I made those both Sustianiacs. -

Whudder middle pickups? 🤔 -
I’m pretty sure he had a half decent sound man. 😝

I recently went looking for a case for my Star project and lucked out to find a used/like new Charvel foam core hard case for it. I believe the case was initially for Kellys but works just fine for the Star. I wouldn't be surprised if a Standard/Explorer/Destroyer fit it in. Better still, it's a good bit lighter than the molded plastic Kelly cases so, I saved a few $$ shipping it down to Georgia be painted. 👍

Yeah, same. 🙄

Therein lies the issue- I "sing" backing vox in the most pedestrian sense. Put it this way: the band tolerates my adding some backing vox. That said, my mic level is kept kinda low, likely because you don't want vox like mine way up in the mix. So, with a low(er) mic level for BV's, I'ma need a sound man to be johnny-on-the-spot with some slider manipulations or get a separate mic for vox only. ETA- The whole time I was typing this, I kept hearing the Scorpions "The Zoo" in my head. 😄

Well, damn! Don't I feel stupid. All these years and I didn't truly understand how a talk box worked. Snagged one of the newer MXR talk boxes and was gobsmacked to discover that the sound/signal, once modified in the tube by the mouth, doesn't then continue on to your amp. The sound coming out of the tube IS the end... ...until you get a mic up next to it. So the sound the "audience" hears is not from your amp per se, it's from your microphone. This creates some interesting issues with regards to mixing sound if a band member, say, plays guitar, sings backing vox and occasionally uses a talk box. The sound guy better be on the ball and I'm guessing there ain't no set it and forget it audio mixes. 😬

Maricela? Sweet lady but I'll see your MJ and raise you a Gravelin. Any day and twice on weekends. Had this installed and got it back today (yes, I can swap p'ups but not in a guitar that has the control cavity shoehorned full o' Sustainiac bits.) It slays. Think VH Fair Warning-era goodness. And for a bit less than what you'd pay for a custom shop Seymour.

Additional pickups- Newer SD TB-4's, Gravelin rewinds (Zza's, Mongooses) SD Invaders, Full Shreds, Alnico 2, DiMarzio Super Distortion, etc. DM for more details/photos.

I bought into the mystique and hype surrounding Maricela's winds years back. Bought a pricey MJ JB online and acquired a couple other of her JB's that arrived in older/vintage axes. Then I discovered that JB's, for my purposes, do not sound as good as the various Mongeese I've ordered from Josh. Even his J2B take on the JB (made to be closer to the original JB wind & characteristics) was uninspiring. If anyone wants to do a side by side comparison between a MJ JB and Gravelin's J2B, I have both.

Deadline Extended!! Best of the HFC V
diablo175 replied to kizanski's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Was riffing more on the general topic of grading in public schools and crazy parental/administrative expectations. We both know that kizanski, as an administrator (literally and figuratively) is free to do whatever he wants with the submissions and the rest of us can go pound sand if we don't like it. Circling back to teaching in public schools, I knew it was time to get the fuck out of teaching when I had an assistant principal ask me to revise my grading policies to accommodate a student (no special needs or learning issues) who made zero effort and turned nothing in. To add insult to injury, she was a PITA in class. It started out as, "can you give her an extension?" and "or can you maybe give her an alternative assignment?" (which I did, though under protest) She didn't do the alternative and the AP went in and changed her marking period grade from an F to a B. I lost all respect for that admin and that was the final nail in the coffin for my desire to teach. Relevance to Vol 5 of TBOTHFC? Zero. 😄 -

As another from the retired teacher category, if I had a dollar for every time I had an administrator tell me to extend my due date/ waive my late policy, I coulda retired a few years earlier. Why shouldn't @kizanski, as a civilian, get to enjoy that loophole? -
eMpTV Is Dead. As In Really, Really Dead
diablo175 replied to crunchee's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I had parents who did not get cable until AFTER I left for college. I missed a sizeable chunk of the early-mid 80's heyday of MTV, along with a lot of the buzz and chatter fodder in high school. I agree that the live footage was always bit more exciting but there was no shortage of inspiration and awe created by the polished MTV vids. They often sold me on purchasing an album or single. On a few rare occasions, they convinced me to avoid the band/album as well. -
Not really. I'm quite okay with the standard Standard headstock on mine. Sure, the coolness factor would be much higher w/a reversed one but there's something to be said about the aesthetics of the traditional orientation of the 6-in-line version. F*ck, I must be getting old(er).

Despite my penchant for gaudy graphics and colors, my Standard is pretty... well, standard. I prefer the classic '59 burst! But I wasn't always that way...
