Examples of Crappy Distorted Guitar Tone
Brooks replied to killertone's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
yep. the tone wizard juices the front end of my carr rambler (clean 6L6 1x12 combo) to sustain and barely distort. turn the guitar volume down and the gain backs off, subtle but really nice classic rawk tone. when i run the carr thru my closed back V30 1x12 cab it gets closer to iommi territory. i will check the RR clip when i get home (i'm in iowa visiting friends this weekend, no speakers here on the hotel computer). bev played drums on the born again tour. it was a cool show, gillian picked a bunch of obscure sabs tunes to do, like "rock n roll doctor" and "supernaut". -

yeah, saw this years ozzfest, & a few years ago's ozzfest w/ mike bordin on drums, and the 1st reunion tour, their sound was very good. also, saw 'em w/ dio ~81 (side 3 of "live evil" was recorded at that show in dallas), and saw 'em w/ ian gillian on the "born again" tour (which also was very good, they did "smoke on the water" as an encore!). i just got a lockhardt tone wizard, which is a geranium boost like the rangemaster. -
Songs you never have to hear again...
Brooks replied to MARKVECTOR82's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
no shit! sometime i notice wrdu will play the SAME songs at the SAME time, almost like they got lazy and just replayed yesterdays broadcast. i like the "2 guys named chris" morning show here in greensboro on 92.5, but they also play the same ol' classic rock clear channel shit. -

i stand corrected! sorry i doubted you, but ya gotta admit the "marshall inside the laney box" does sound made up, people do say a lot of shit. that's so cool about your buddy working at criteria and meeting iommi! sabs is my fave band, i'm a huge fan (at least of the orig lineup). check out "how black was our sabbath", written by roadies graham wright & david tange, best book i've read on them yet. -

huh, where'd you hear that? damn, i used to have his techs email addy... i asked his tech last year about his equipment history, and he (mike clement) emailed back that he might put one together on the iommi.com site (i just went there & saw the "gear" section is still "under construction") i'm sure its possible that he used a strat or different amp on some stuff, but everything i've ever read said it was all sg's & laneys (except 2 tunes on the 1st album)... that shitty raspy tone can also be heard on the live "never say die" DVD; i doubt he had a pignose mic'd up behind that wall o' laneys ...and the "marshall guts inside a laney head" thing sounds like science fiction to me (i mean no offence, but c'mon). -

hmmm. i don't like most of his tones before 1998's "a go go", but on that album he threw out the chorus pedal and switched to mesa boogies, big improvement. everything he's done since i like, but i wouldn't put him in my short list of best tone. short list of fave players, absolutely. -

WHAT? Dude, Alex Lifeson always gets amazing tones. Always. i'm gonna disagree w/ BOTH of y'all on alex lifeson; his tone is good to great on ALL the 70's stuff, but when he switched to stratoids and soilid state amps sometime after "signals", his tone got sucky. i lost interest around then, but i noticed that his tone on the "rush in rio" dvd is good, tho. here's one that truly sucks; mark farner from grand funk. i like most of grand funk's tunes and singing, but his tone, ewwwww. tony iommi's tone went from good to shite between "sabbath bloody sabbath" (good to great) and "sabotage" (raspy thin, too much gain), and sucked up 'til his switch to marshalls and mesas on "heaven & hell". i lost interest after "mob rules". -
i never do, ha, as for junkie heros, don't forget phil lynot, & 70's aerosmith.

The perfect Hamer! (for me)
Brooks replied to hardheartedbill's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
bill has gone full circle back to the canoe paddle mirage! just kidding, i'm a kidder. i liked your 1st mirage, too. -
i love kyuss, esp "sky valley" & "circus left town". also love obsessed "church within", and spirit caravan "jug fulla sun". hoping there will be another tenacious d cd!! saw these guys w/ acoustics on HBO, they're from new zealand & are called "flight of the conchords", friggin hilarious acoustic comedy ala tenacious d, check 'em out.

looks like you could call it Em7/A, or A7 add 11 no 5 (ick, too long)
-
i like the ol' miles davis "so what" chord, "6/9 no 3rd". from low note, its 6, 9, 5, 1. the lack of a 3rd makes it open & ambigious sounding. ---3 ---3 --2 --2 ---- ----

Any new groups that play like in the 70's 80's?
Brooks replied to billhart22's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
has anybody mentioned govt mule? not that new, & almost as derivitive as jet (whom i also like), but i really dig the 1st few mule albums. -

awww, fu ain't that bad compared to some of the "stoner rock" bands i've gotten lately (IMFO avoid these - high on fire, unida, orange goblin, st vitus, hidden hand). i really dig a few of the original "stoner" cd's from the 90's; kyuss "sky valley" & "circus left town", obsessed "church within", spirit caravan "jug fulla sun", c.o.c. "deliverence". or, skip directly to the source and get the sabs box set. -

Stupid But I have to ask about strings
Brooks replied to billhart22's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
+1. d'addarios mostly, but if we're recording or doing something special i'll get DR's. -
saw iron maiden monday, they now have 3 gee-tar players. ha!
-
funny nobody mentioned grand funk in their list. they came out at the same time as zeppelin, influenced heavy rock, and sold a bunch of records. i'd put zz top, van halen, & grand funk as my fave classic usa bands. edit: & CCR !!!!

Brooks replied to nosajwp's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard

Brooks replied to nosajwp's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
yeah, guys like eric johnson, jeff beck, and SRV were trying to get that elusive ratt/crue "tone" all the wrong way; they needed a bunch of rack gear and floyded guitars, not stompboxes/tube amps/vintage guitars. what a bunch of idiots! ha. -
we took monte montgomery's 30 second version of "stairway to freebird" and expanded it into a whole tune; "all along the stairway to freebird". people get confused when they hear the lyrics from one tune sung over the chords of another tune, ha.

always a problem. we used to be pretty militant about no uninvited guests onstage in my old coverband, only ex-members. same w/ requests; i always like to use the old "bruce springsteen (or insert requested artist here) will be here next week, thank you". however, when dave & I play duo gigs, money talks. we will let anyone on the mic (or request a song) for $20, we then fake the tune for ~30 seconds then stop, announce "lets hear it for drunk guy" and launch into another tune while breaking eye contact, ha. we made $176 in tips a few weeks ago when these 4 drunk folks kept asking us to do songs we really didn't know (and a few we did know). best tip was $50 if we let one drunk get on the mic and do his "LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!!" imitation. dude then tried to dance on a table, spilling himself and everything on the table to the floor, ha!
