Nerd, useless additional info: the biggest ticket number they have sold in a concert was in.... Chile. I was there. -

El, I was attempting to answer holLoWskull's question as to why Hamer's "frugal" models did not sell.
-
http://www.usmasters.com/under1000.htm THAT'S what I'm talking about! 1: Ugly headstocks do not help selling tons of guitars; unless a famous and admired dude uses them publicly 2: Many of the Daytonas/T51s were actually very heavy, a rare building mistake from Hamer. Those were relevant products, IMO, but invalidated the "you can buy a Hamer unseen" mantra.

I think the "problem" is here. Not in the upcharges. I know this is a list price, but Newports @ around $1,000 in pristine condition are found. This is just not the range of prices the market wants to see from a Hamer guitar. It's just not going to happen. Hamer needs to find what to build for $1,000, street price. Only if they find something and make some money selling it, they will survive. The "premium route" went downhill fast, and that was during the fastest growing economy we are going to see for more than 5 years ahead at least.

Yes, and Mick Taylor spanks him too, on the same concert. -
4 Digit Standard #190 FS
Jorge replied to Menmojo's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
Yes, but assuming that can be done as far as the new owner needs it to be done. i.e., the truss rod is not close to fully used for that already. I also find odd the 9 gauge comment. I would tend to thing that the lighter the gauge, the less that problem appears. -
Sometimes things that look tough, are not really. Jol is a brilliant designer, and I am sure he will be more than fine. Best of luck to him. This was going to happen, sooner or later. Maintaining a business mandates making money, and the actual vision made that impossible. I am sure Jol will be at least as well as he was, and being out of one's comfort zone sometimes works wonders. FMIC is a very successful company, and we should at least give them the benefit of a doubt. This even might be their chance to kill Gibson, once and for all. At least, personally, I am looking forward to the possibility of having Hamer guitars, made by the same impressive craft men as always (hopefully), but more focused on a streamlined, less-bling, and more comercially-designed approach.

I love the Soloist. They should have a version with "normal" (floating, but non-Floyd) bridge.
-
My guess is that would be a good opportunity to sell.

So - How Much *Should* a Custom Hamer Cost?
Jorge replied to veatch's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Wow, I was apparently lucky. My CO in 2004 was $1,700, IIRC. Not a lot of "bling" though. It was a Korina Special, with Humbuckers. The result was amazing, as usual, quality-wise. I just should have ordered it with a Standard headstock... -
Harry, I believe that's what they wished they could have been. In the consumer's mind, "perception is reality". Hamer is perceived as a "wonderful bang for the buck guitar". Very few people would -and will- be willing to get a $5k Custom Order from Hamer. Why would they? Hamers are supposed to be cheap! They just did not position themselves for what they want to be, but with today's competition, and with their decisions about design, it's too late. I don't think that's going to work. And, yes, PRS did it. I don't think for a minute PRS makes a better guitar than Hamer, but they could ingrain effectively the idea in the consumer's mind...and that was it.

Another sign of "no love" for Hamers
Jorge replied to Hgb5000's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I am sure Jol likes his headstock design very much. He also probably knows most people do not, but since he is content with very low product output for his needs, he just hopes enough of the minority would like it so he could sell what he produces. Just a normal, legit business decision. Whether finally successful, especially in comparison with other competitors, only time will tell. Of course not... -
Another sign of "no love" for Hamers
Jorge replied to Hgb5000's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
The Hamer headstock looks great. It has a total bad ass rock n roll design. Simple but elegant. Good for you. Good also for the majority of members of the HFC, which seem to find it OK. The issue is that "most" people, from the guitar-playing public at large, find it ugly. Have you noticed how a typical Hamer looks hanging from people that are playing it, especially standing? Have you noticed that -more often than not- even dealers advertise their Hamers, either with the guitar against a black background, so the shape of the headstock (also black) does not become apparent? Many do not even show the complete guitar in their pictures, they focus mostly on the body, which is gorgeous (not a Hamer design, though...talking about the Special-derived line of guitars). Remember the successful and drool-inducing "Modern Vintage" ads? Yep, black background behind the headstock. How conveeeeeenient...
