The perfect Hamer! (for me)
Turdus replied to hardheartedbill's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
... and I was going to keep my mouth shut until you chimed in, LOL.... -
Early 90's Diablo. A friend of a friend apparently would use his parents credit cards to buy guitars. Then, he'd pawn them. When the ticket came due, he'd attempt to find buyers to give him the money to get them out of pawn. I never understood this behaviour, LOL. It was before the days of an ATM on every corner. That said, I got the Diablo and a nice LP Standard for extremely cheap.

IIRC, Sound City were distributed by Dalles Arbiter. I had a couple of the 120 watt (6xEL34) heads, and a 50. Terrible hiss from all of them, but the 120's sounded great for bass, at least I thought. Geez, I think I even sold one to ElDuave circa '93. Did I Dave, or am I dreaming again?

Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal - opinions?
Turdus replied to Disturber's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I owned one of these a few years back. It is a fairly low gain pedal. I had a 1987x head with a MV installed in it. Without the MV, the head is very loud. If you crank up the volume, and limit the MV, you can get some dirt, but the head will not approach high gain. When plugging into a clean amp, the BB pedal came very close to sounding like the 1987 head with the MV. But, since I was able to get the sound from the amp, I really had no need for the pedal, and sold it. -
Bill -- That suit is you, LOL! Where's the Marshall?

Polically active bands...whatcha think?
Turdus replied to Brownsound's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
You want political content? Pick up any Bad Religion disc. From what I've heard, Greg Graffin is a PHD, and he teaches at the University Of Maryland. My guess is that he must teach Political Science, LOL -
Replace with switchcraft 151 jack -or- Use a cable with switchcraft tips

I have owned 2, and did not care for either... one was a Subway Rocket, and the other was a very early combo 60/100 I believe. What I did not like about them was that the Mesa overdrive seems very mushy and undefined to me. The clean is OK, and the higher gain is just not me. That said, I used the Subway Rocket at a practice once. I did not like it, but 2 of my band mates thought it sounded good.

Wow! Sorry to hear this. Hope he gets better soon.

What's the record for longest USPS MO delivery?
Turdus replied to El_Natoro's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I doubt you'll be out the money. They'll probably make you wait 30 days to submit a claim though. I once bought a guitar off Ebay. The chosen delivery was USPS. It seemed to go right from the USPS counter to a pawn shop near by. The sender had no tracking other than a stamped insurance receipt. 30 days later, when there was no guitar, the sender was able to initiate a claim. I finally got my money back, but it was an uncomfortable wait. The guitar appeared on Ebay, in another state, 6 months later. The seller was a dealer. I asked where he got the guitar, and explained it was "hot". He said a pawn shop that was very near that post office, LOL. I contacted the Postmaster and explained the situation, as I wanted to buy the guitar. He said since the sender did not submit a S/N on the insurance claim, that the USPS had no claims to the guitar, and that I could buy it free and clear from the dealer. -
I've got too many droppings on this thread, but need to respond to this one. Dave -- on Moxy, I could not agree more... I've got all their stuff, and still listen to it weekly. Even have the Under The Lights (with Mike Reno), but do not listen to that one very often, LOL. Earl Johnson is extremely cool. I emailed him years ago, asking him about guitars and equipment the band used. He treated me like a long lost friend, through several emails back and forth. Really a neat guy. Riot -- another winner. I have all the Guy Speranza stuff (RIP, The Best!), and the first couple with Rhett (RIP). I was doing radio when Fire Down Under came out, and their management must have been tipped off that I was playing it, as I received a "Thank You" post card... pertty cool. Godz -- Gotta Keep Runnin' -- a true classic!

4 out of 5 Doctors did a reunion in 1990 at the Bayou in DC. Jeff Severson called me and asked me to do Stage Management. I was pretty excited about that. They sold out the Bayou no problem. the Ravyns did release an album in the early 80's that had that tune on it. They were a great bar band... One of the guys went on to one of Uncle Greggy's favorites... ."Company Of Wolves"

Good choices Dave! We've talked about MMI before. I have the Expanding Man cd. Never heard another thing about them, after their major label debut. The Odds -- great power pop songwriters, but the lyrics always struck me as ... well, Odd, and just plain too quirky.

LOL.. yep, that was me.... the former Turdus. I saw the CD in Tower one day, but did not pick it up. Going to have to add Bad Religion to the list. They've got a boatload of records out. And I've said it before, nobody writes better lyrics than Greg Graffin. Pick up "Stranger Than Fiction", if you're into intelligent hard punk. Edited to add: BR is classified as punk, but to me, they are just rock & roll.

Love Nut: Their second CD "Baltimucho" was scheduled for release on Interscope, but apparently the deal fell through. Eventually released on an Indie. Brilliant Power Pop. Andy Bopp went on to form Myracle Brah. They've got some killer stuff too, but in my opinion there is a bit more filler.

eBay: which part of the word "Auction"...
Turdus replied to darc's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
An Ebay seller can legitimately end an auction by selling to the high bidder. Ebay gets their fees this way. So why not take a chance and see if a person would sell to you? A guy recently put up a bass that I wanted. His BIN, and starting bid were way too high. I shot him an offer, and told him that if he wanted to revise his BIN, that I would buy it. He did, and I bought it. -
LOL... That dude is like the "Where's Waldo" of Rock & Roll. Some cool T shirts he has there....

Bill --- OK.. I've got the same one... I did not want to break bad on Voodoo Labs without knowing if it was the pedal, or me, LOL. They have responded to some inquiries I sent, so they get an A+ for customer service, even though I bought used. They have told me that I can experience a gate type effect with the pedal. It seems to sound very similar to the tune you posted. This will take some experimentation for sure. Thanks to all for the replies.

Not sure why, but I bought an ocatavia the other night. Won't mention the brand but it was cheap enough for me to want to check out. What is this thing supposed to do, LOL? Perhaps this one is defective, but so far I am thinking I have a metal box, with a few transistors, that acts as some kind of a funky noise gate. Can anybody enlighten me?

Ahhh.. Humor me for a minute please..... A good friend of mine used to work at GC. He had told me that there are guys out there that refuse to buy from GC & MF. I decided to test this theory. I put a 1 year old bass on Ebay, and listed it with a BIN of $300 higher than the $1000 it could be purchased for "new" from MF. Their price included shipping. Mine did not. Although it took a few days, the bass sold for $1300, and the guy paid overnight shipping. What is your aversion to GC? Is it market share? Do you drink Schmidts because Bud has a bigger market share? Just curious, because from now on, I am going to list every one of my auctions for more than the item can be bought for at GC/MF.

LOL.. I can no longer listen to the Ramones. I did mention that some of the Status Quo studio stuff sounds silly, and a search of their discography seems to back this... They have done at least one, if not two albums of covers, with the material being questionable, I am sure. I will look for a CD copy of the late 70's live album. That was my first intorduction to the band, and one that I remember as being fairly cool. The videos on their website have been changed overnight as well. They still have the same titles as yesterday, but the songs are different.

I had not thought much about these guys since the late 70's. In a strange association, I was researching Mustang basses, and recalled that their bass player used one in the 70's. Did a search for the band, and ended up at: http://www.statusquo.com I had no idea that these guys never stopped playing, and they seem to have consistently put out albums since the late 60's. Does anybody here know enough about them to reccomend some of their better stuff? I used to have the 70's live album, which was decent. Some of their studio stuff sounds a bit silly. http://www.statusquo.com/clip.htm Check out the video for "Whatever You Want". Sounds real good to me. Only two of the guys are original, and they appear to be playing the same Tele's they used from the early days. I was amazed at the size of the place they are playing in that video, as well as the cool Marshall amps.

Hey Bill -- how long has Schecter been around? What made me think of them recently was I whipped out VH II, and I believe that Michael Anthony is pictured playing a Schecter bass. Perhaps it is a Charvel, but I don't think it was a Fender. It looks like a sunburst P, but if I recall, it has a J pickup as well. Perhaps somebody who has the album can confirm. I just have the dinky CD artwork to look at. Then, the local indy dealer used to have a wall full of Scheter stuff. I never paid any attention. Getting back into bass recently, I am looking around, etc. Already done the Hamer basses. No complaints, but would just like to try something else.
