  1. I've not heard that much Carvin PA gear, so as a general statement, that may be true. I was fortunate enough to have an 808S in my possession to test out against the Carvin mixer I got. I really expected the Mackie to bury it, and it did not. Matter of fact, the Carvin was a bit quieter than the Mackie, as far as hiss coming through the speakers, etc. I've also been able to drive a Mackie into clipping range, and it is not a pretty sound. Not knocking the Mackie. I like their stuff. Let's just say that I was impressed by this particular Carvin piece. Only time will tell how reliable it is going to be.
  2. Nice...but that really looks like overkill for our needs. We play mostly small bar gigs with the acoustic act. What do you think of the amp that I listed? Do you see any glaring omitions that would defeat the purpose of upgrading? I've never heard Carvin speakers. The issue I see with that setup is the shipping cost, at $80. If you don't like the system, you will eat that plus the return shipping. Maybe I missed something, but the package price does not really look better than the component prices, including shipping. You pay $20 more for the package shipping, but they throw in speaker cables. If you are wiiling to risk it, go for it. If it were me, I'd buy the mixer, and make a decision on it. Then buy one speaker, and make that decision. If the speaker works, then buy another.
  3. Rob, This is the Carvin I bought: http://www.carvin.com/products/mixer.php?ItemNumber=C1644P I also bought a Crown power amp, and a couple EQs, so I could use the 4 internal amps for monitors. We've used it for an outdoor show in very cold temperatures, a lot of rehearsing with cabinets, and as the console for our headphone rehearsals. This particular unit sounds great. I had the Yamaha, and a Mackie 808S to compare it to, during the 10 day trial. For only a couple hundred more than the Mackie, the Carvin does not have the same power output, but several other features that made it the winner. I thought the Mackie was a good sounding unit, and I was initially concerned how the Carvin would sound. To me, it sounded as good, if not better than the Mackie. I've not tried the unit you listed, but keep in mind that they have a 10 day trial. On the Yamaha BR's..... I bought a BR 12" monitor, and a JBL JRX 1-12". I thought the JBL sounded a lot clearer. I took them both back, and picked up two 1-12" club series monitors. Clearly the winner of the 3.
  4. Poe, How about some more info on what the problem is with the sound? Muffled? Distorted? Which Yamaha speakers? Club series? BRs? I was pointed towards the Club series, and they sound much clearer to me than the BRs. I have a Yamaha 6 ch mixer, and when compared to a Mackie 808, it sounds very dark, and a bit muffled, and I can get the channels to distrort. I'd say this is because there is no input gain control on the Yamaha. I think this is a very critical requirement for any PA mixer. I ended up going with a Carvin powered mixer. More features than the Mackie, and it sounds equally as good to me.
  5. Yes sir Tom.... there are at least 3 Gamma records. The 2nd one rocks quite a bit harder than the first. I can not recall anything from the 3rd album.... have not heard it in 20 years. I may be totally mistaken, but I think Davey Pattison was not the vocalist on 3.
  6. I've got Gamma 2 on CD. There are quite a few good cuts on that one. The first one is not bad either. But I think "2" was the best othe 3 releases they did, that I am aware of.
  7. Xanadu by Rush. By '77, I was well aware of who Rush was. But this was their first real foray into Synths. I was fortunate enough to see them on the "Farewell To Kings" tour in a small theatre. The first half of the show, Geddy had a mini moog on a stand, and they played a lot of this album. Then, the synth was taken offstage by a roadie, and they basically performed "All The World's A Stage" To this day, I can still listen to all 11:08 of Xanadu, and not lose interest.
  8. reminds me of the song "For The Singer of R.E.M." by fIREHOSE
  9. Ha Kiz... 3 years ago, I was where you are, but I had more amps. Today..... 1 LP Deluxe 1 Lp Jr. 1 Tele 1 Strat 1 Jap Strat 12 1 Fender Bass 1 Decent Acoustic 1 Not so Decent Acoustic And believe it or not, I think I am done buying. I do not need anything else, and don't look that much anymore.
  10. '83 to '85... from the "Ultimate Guitar Book" .... transitional, issued at time of financial cut-backs for Fender, and lacking classic strat features. ... only 2 controls, socket flush to pickguard.... and restyled vibrato. Looks legit to me. Edited to add: When Leo died, the Washington post did an article on him. They pictured a strat, and I seem to recall it being one of these.
  11. I picked up the $79 dual 15 band EQ. They offer a lot of features for the buck. I use it to shape monitor EQ, so if it died, I'd probably be OK. It did survive its first assignment.... 3 hours at an outdoor show, back in December, in about 30 degree temp. From what I've read on some of the Pro Sound forums out there, folks seem to think that Behringer borrows designs from other companies. I am not sure about that, but it seems that they don't have a great rep in the pro biz. So far, my $79 has done allright.
  12. Dude -- who cares about quality control.... post a few more pics of the Dean girls.......
  13. Yo HT98, The Plimsouls are actually in the movie, playing in a bar. The name of the record is "Everywhere At Once". They had one out before that, and shortly after this one Peter Case went solo.... acoustic type stuff. You should be able to find "Everywhere At Once" without a lot of trouble. For years, I've seen it in every CD cut out bin for about $6. But, I just checked Ebay, and see the price going up a little, so the cut out bin days may be over. Peter Case was on fire for that record. Great Power pop, with several songs that reach the same intensity as "Million Miles Away"
  14. Don't remember that one. Got the record, so I'll give it a listen tomorrow. Just listened to Cheap Date. I remember it now, obviously. What I should have said was with the brilliance they displayed on "Jenny", I always wondered why more of their songs were not as memorable. What is funny is that I really am Mr. "anti hit song" But I could listen to that one over, and over, and not get tired of it, LOL.
  15. Do you mean Tommy Tutone? If so.... I am fortunate enough to have been in my late teens/early 20's from '79 to '83. That was really the height of the post punk, power pop explosion. There were so many great bands, and a lot of brilliant pop tunes. 867-5309 is a great pop song. It was great back then, and even today, the original cut holds up well. Forget the fact that every band plays it. It is still a great song. That said, I've got their first two records. In my opinion, there is nothing memorable about any of the other cuts. It is a mystery that I've wondered about all these years. The planets must have been aligned just right when they wrote that one. Look at the Plimsouls. Everybody knows "A Million Miles Away". That tune was nowhere near as big as 867-5309. But the album it comes from is filled with well written, memorable songs. I do not think there is one crappy tune on that record. They should have enjoyed a lot more success than they did.
  16. Jaye -- did you keep any of yours?
  17. Last I heard these guys went under. Between myself, and band mate, we had 4 of them at one time. Nice guitars, with little resale value. Seeing the pics of the firebirds in the other thread got me curious. I checked Ebay, and not many listed for sale, or even in the completed auction section. GMP website is still up, but I've not followed them. Have their guitars become super collectible all of a sudden?
  18. Since it had tubes, and channel switching, it is probably a 4210. I'm not up on the prices on those, because I don't care for the switching 800's. Apparently they were popular, so it might be worth checking in to. If it was the 800, 1x12, no chan switching, I'd be all over it for $399.
  19. Did you make sure it actually is a tube amp? Marshall made a 1-12" solid state that looks like the JCM800 channel switcher. IIRC, the model is 5210, or something like that.
  20. ha ha! Sure...... LOL! Edited to add: My wife has never commented on my playing... just my vocals. In 15 years, I've gone from none, to backing, to actually doing a portion of the band's lead vocals. I was not blessed with golden vocal chords. My wife reminds me of this every day, LOL.
  21. Who do these guys think they are? The Bee Gees? I don't think so.
  22. Dave -- back in '79 I had the pleasure of seeing AC/DC (with Bon Scott) open for UFO. The only thing that would have made that night more complete was if Schenker had been on the tour. Paul Chapman was there. Don't get me wrong... Paul did a great job.... but for me, UFO will always be Mogg/Way/Schenker/Parker & I'll even include Raymond. Does the DVD include anything from the classic lineup?
  23. Axis Of Worthlessness The Look Bunny With Pancakes on head
  24. Sorry to hear this, and hang in there Bill.
  25. LOL.... that is actually one of my favorite Rush tunes..... I am old enough (and fortunate enough) to have seen them on the "Farewell To Kings" tour, at Warner Theater in DC. What was so cool about that was that obviously Geddy had just discover the mini moog or whatever it was he used. The first half of the concert, the single moog stood on a stand for the parts from the album. They took a brief intermission, the keyboard was removed, and they came out and played all the early stuff. BTW... That cut is from 1975, not the 80's
