I need advice on a "kind of" custom guitar idea

Hi everyone, I've been thinking about this for some time and the more I think the more I really want to try.

Here's what I'm thinking about. I'm thinking of having a guitar finished by my kids. They both love the draw and paint. I was thinking of stripping a guitar and having them do their art word and then having it clear coated professionally.

Now I'm nut sure weather I should get a guitar, strip it and go from there or do something through Warmoth or one of those places? I even thought of seeing if Hamer would do it.

Any opinions, advice or options would be greatly appreciated. I really think it would look awesome.

Thanks in advance

I had a cheapo super-strat back in the early 90s that I let my then-only son fingerpaint. Stripped down the clearcoat to leave the base color (it was white) and let Joey go to town on it - handprints, smudges, pours, you name it, in vivid green, pink and blue, then I shot it with cheap rattlecan clear. It came out interesting to say the least - it was actually hideous looking hahaha.

I would trace an outline of the guitar body on pieces of paper and let your kids brainstorm about different design ideas before actually committing to this.

I was accually planning on doing that already. They're both really into drawing and they really come up with some interesting ideas. And they're not really little anymore, they're soon to be 9 and 10 years old, so it wouldn't be just scribbling type stuff.

Sounds like a great idea. My son is older but he's always been an exceptional artist. I should've of thought of this before but it's not too late. Thanks for the idea and good luck with yours!

Clearcoating afterward seems like a good idea. If you go that route, you'll first need to identify what product it'll be, then check compatability with what the kids are gonna use. You'll also want to consider what methods the kids will use to get their paint onto the body (brushes, fingers, spray, etc) as each one can cause thickness differences that will require mucho clear to level and lay flat (assuming that's what you want). If it were me, I'd shoot it first with the basic backgraound color, then coat with a few clear coats, then let them have at it. If they screw up, you can still sand back to the clear and not mess up the background.

Funny you mentioned that...

I was thinking about the same thing for this pink MIJ Strat body for a guitar my son is putting together. It would be a cool way to "lock in" that moment in time.

Not sure on the painting/finishing but I would check out ebay for an old strat body or whatever type of body you are going for.

I found a 98' USA Strat body for around $250 with bridge, hardware and pickups. The finish is beat but it will be a great player once I get a different neck on it.

I let my friend (he's still like a kid :P do this back in 1984 to my Fender Bullit bass using his airbrush. Then clear coated it. It lasted all through the years. (still have it)

I might let my kids to it to one too. Would be pretty cool for a Dad.

to reduce your investment, maybe buy an SX thru Rondo...strip it...let the kids do their thing...

then, if desired, you can spend what you want for a good neck, pups, hardware, etc.....or keep as is...

Similarly, if you don't want to take the time and effort to strip a body, there are plenty of bare bodies new and used on the bay. All cheaper than Warmoth.

A carvin bolt-on kit would also work well since you get decent parts and the body comes unfinished.

I forgot about Carvin. I think that this would be good for you. It's a pretty decent guitar too! Good thinking Hamerman :P
