Scarabaeus Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 More insane shipping cost gouging, and (virtually) no PayPal protection. WTF?
Steve Haynie Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 $2000 starting bid for a black USA Standard autographed by Rick Nielsen and $120 for shipping. Zero feedback seller and no mention of what the charity might even be. Makes me want to bid.
Steve Haynie Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 It's back. The shipping is now only $40, but the price is $2000 and the reserve is not met.
Scarabaeus Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 The shipping is now only $40, but the price is $2000 and the reserve is not met. And still only $200 PayPal protection. On an item that expensive, that amount of protection is useless.

On an item that expensive, that amount of protection is useless. That's why I always use a Credit Card to pay for stuff through PayPal. That way, if I get screwed, I figure can just call up the CC company and get my money back. Haven't had to put that theory to the test as of yet. Despite all the eBay horror stories flying around, I've never had a problem buying/selling anything from there or with PayPal. (yet.) -Austin

On an item that expensive, that amount of protection is useless. You're correct, though many feel that PayPal "protection" is useless regardless of the coverage amount. If you're concerned, pay with a credit card that allows you to contest the payment if there's a problem. In any event, here's why this seller can only get $200.00 in PayPal coverage: 13.9 eBay Items Eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection. Every item on eBay (except Live Auctions and vehicles) that meets the above requirements is eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection up to $200.00 USD (Basic Tier Coverage Amount), but items are only eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection up to $2,000.00 USD (Top Tier Coverage Amount) and should be identified as eligible items in the eBay listing if: seller's eBay feedback rating is at least 50; At least 98% of the seller's eBay feedback is positive; The seller has a Verified Premier or Verified Business Account in good standing; The listing was on an eligible eBay site (eBay.com and certain other eBay sites self identified as such) PayPal is listed as an acceptable payment method; and The seller is a PayPal User from one of the following countries: - Argentina - Italy - Austria - Jamaica - Australia - Japan - Belgium - Korea - Brazil - Mexico - Canada - Netherlands - Chile - New Zealand - China - Norway - Czech Republic - Poland - Denmark - Portugal - Ecuador - Singapore - Finland - Sweden - France - Spain - Germany - Switzerland - Greece - Taiwan - Hong Kong - Thailand - Hungary - United Kingdom - India - United States - Ireland - Uruguay

I also use my credit card for payments through PayPal. I once bought something on eBay from someone in the UK. I did not receive the item and the seller did not reply my mails to work out something. Since the amount was only 30 GBP, I thought it would be expensive to have PayPal solve the problem to get my money back. I contacted the bank card company and they gave me my money back. Of course I had to prove in some way the story was true, so all those unreplied mails helped to show what happened. Thank God till now it only happened once.
