Steve Haynie Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 As ambitious as Beatles albums and Brian Wilson's albums were, the writers and musicians never assumed an outsize sense of importance about their work, nor did they act as though their albums could change mankind or that they plumbed the philosophical depths of the ages. Nor did they act like they could phone it in it would be just as good. Those are the marks of pretentiousness.I think you just nailed down U2 and drove a stake through Bono's heart.
santellavision Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 ZZ Tops Eliminator. They were so freakin' smoking on the first 3 LPs. Then... Barf.
JohnnyB Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Q: How do you spell pretentious?A: E-L-PHow about Y-E-S? Especially after about the 4th album?I constantly confuse the two when I think back to mid-'70s rock myself.Which begs the question:Have Keith Emerson and Rick Wakefield ever appeared in public at the same time?
MCChris Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Have Keith Emerson and Rick Wakefield ever appeared in public at the same time? And can Rick Wakefield throw a knuckleball?
MCChris Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 On the Yes tip, I don't know if pretentious is the right word for it, but what was with the brief '70s trend of depicting naked man ass on album covers (Yes' "Going for the One," Rush's "Hemispheres," etc.)? I never got that. Trying to be artsy in a "David" sorta way?Back to the original topic, ELO's "Out of the Blue" was pretty pretentious in that they actually thought people would enjoy a double-album's worth of absolute horseshit.
mudshark Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 The Seeds - FutureCreedence Clearwater Revival - Mardi Gras
JohnnyB Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Wakeman.lolWoops. It's been 32 years since "Six Wives of Henry VIII" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." It's not like he's been in the vanguard of the pop music press since then.
Guest pirateflynn Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Back to the original topic, ELO's "Out of the Blue" was pretty pretentious in that they actually thought people would enjoy a double-album's worth of absolute horseshit.I still enjoy it. Hopefully, someday we will listen to it together and I will tell you my story about Penny Baker.
Rockola Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I haven't heard it... but if Allan Holdworth says "I wish I didn't play on it", that's all I need to hear.
Devnor Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I haven't heard it... but if Allan Holdworth says "I wish I didn't play on it", that's all I need to hear. Now that's funny as hell!
seeker Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 so apparently alot of people would prefer that Rock stay in it's natural form as a folk art. Boring.+100I pity those who think rock styles and lyrics should be limited to everyday happenings with simple song structures. They are missing so much.
