marcnorth Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 This has got to be some kind record. http://cgi.ebay.com/Hamer-checkerboard-fin...1QQcmdZViewItem
Guest pirateflynn Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Apparently, somebody thinks it's a rare factory original !
serial Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 It is very cool looking indeed and I tossed in a few bids myself (even though I'm in DE-acquisition mode at the moment). Pickups don't look original and the factory has the finish listed as "white", but I'm a sucker and a half for that checkerboard graphic!
DavidE Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I sure hope it's factory original for that kind of dough. If it's an aftermarket job advertised as factory, the seller could have a problem.
MTM105 Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 The winner bought a Cheap Trick Tour book earlier on ebay.According to the Serial # the guitar should be an 81.It would probably be cheaper to buy an original with original parts and have someone paint it. What do I know?

What do I know? That finish looked perfect (like the old Hamers of Nielsen's) and to get someone to do it right will cost in the $1000-1500 range. I know, I've been looking for years! While the factory log has it as "white", there's no way to guarantee that that wasn't factory-the yellowing was pretty convincing looking! The winner is an HFC member who knows Hamers very well.
belgian Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Bargain time seems over, even in Germany, there was a T-62 that went almost 1300 $ last week, and today a '81 prototype went more than 1000 $. (with a non original humbucker, I guess). I had a simular one for 400 $ a few years ago.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A:IT&ih=015

belgian Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 The single coil seems aged, the humbucker doesn't...
kizanski Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 The single coil seems aged, the humbucker doesn't...I've seen that dozens of times on those guitars, original and otherwise.Either way, it wouldn't impact the sale price much. The guitar as a whole looks good, is what I meant. If I were looking for one, I'd pay a grand for that one.
tommy p Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I'm brand new here - in fact, I just found the place today after losing that very checkerboard Special and wondering if I dropped out too soon. Anyone care to guesstimate what it would have been worth with a non-checkerboard finish to help educate me? How hard is the checkerboard finish to come by? Anyone know if Hamer (or anyone else) will still do the checkerboard and approximately how much it would cost?To introduce myself: huge Cheap Trick fan, never had or wanted a Hamer until recently I played in a band and that's all the other guitarist used. He had various models from various years and bought and sold regularly. In the last 4-5 years, he's probably had at least 12 different Hamers. I played them and like them, and the Rick Nielsen connection got me thinking about looking for one of my own in checkerboard or korina. And now, here's my kick-myself story. In the early 90's, I had a chance to buy TV Yellow AND a red Special new for $500 (for both!) and PASSED. Back then, that was a pretty big sum and I had no idea what Hamer's quality or reputation were.Anyway, good to be here, and any answers to the questions in the first paragraph would be greatly appreciated.
kizanski Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 White ones are typically in the $700 - $850 range. More with matching headstock. You have to take at least $100 - $150 off for unoriginal pickups, though.
serial Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 That's nice and all, but I'm partial to THIS one. A little James Honeyman-Scott anyone?

Anyone know if Hamer (or anyone else) will still do the checkerboard and approximately how much it would cost?Welcome! The price range above is pretty accurate for a regular Special, but the early 80s b/w graphics typically command higher prices. Sadly, the checkerboard like Nielsen's isn't available from Hamer (really never was, except for a few one-offs here and there). Hamer won't do the finish, but there are other shops, like GMW that will do it for you. Last time I checked a few years ago, Lee quoted @$1,400 for the total job (that included inlays)...I'm quite sure that there are many places that would do it cheaper.
Steve Haynie Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 How hard is the checkerboard finish to come by?Hamer will not make a checkerboard guitar for ANYONE except Rick Nielsen. There were a few done in the early to mid 80's that Rick allowed, and one in the past year that was made for a charity raffle.I am one of those people willing to bet that the Special in question has an original finish. I swear I heard that there was a Special out there somewhere. I am also glad the guitar went to an HFC member rather than someone buying it solely for the Cheap Trick connection knowing that the line between the two is kind of blurry already.
kizanski Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 That's nice and all, but I'm partial to THIS one. A little James Honeyman-Scott anyone? I hate you.
