Jeff R Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Went this morning to the one local music shop I've never been to. I didn't know they were a EBMM dealer. Historically, I've yet to play an EBMM I didn't at least appreciate, if not really like a lot. Said shop had a few of the Petrucci guitars in stock. I've been curious about them since they came out. I always wanted to try one but there were no local EBMM dealers (or so I thought) to give one a spin. So now a few are right there, teasing me. I pulled down the color that caught my eye, the exact guitar in this photo ... Damn. Fucking hard-ass GAS now. I should have fucking known myself better. Shit.
Feynman Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Looks great! Buy it!P.S. I don't know if typing "buy it!" works on everyone, but Sir Isham ordered me to buy a Standard with that technique, and well, it worked.
BubbaVO Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 It would take a real man to go and get that guitar.
atquinn Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Comfy bodies, but those things have some skinny-ass necks!-Austin
Steve Haynie Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 If you pass up that Petrucci they will make more. If you find yourself in that "I just gotta have it" fram of mind in another month or two then buy it.
silentman Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Looks like radiance red. Slick color. EB makes some of the best guitars on the market. I love my Petruccis. If you want me to give you some more GAS contact me. Here's a pic of mine:
MCChris Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Those are ALL yours, Lou? Damn. Nice collection!
silentman Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Yes, Chris. All mine. The one on the right was my first. I basically bought it as a backup for my duotone. I quickly realized that the JP smoked the duo (IMO) and I sold the duo and bought another JP for a backup. The BFR version just pushed it over the top for me. They are my gigging guitars. I love them. The trem is awesome and they are very versitile.
MCChris Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Is the BFR version the one with the different arm bevel?
silentman Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Yeah, the BFR has a normal arm bevel, rather than the scoop seen on the regular models. They also changed up the body woods to alder, with a mhogany neck and a mahogany 'tone block' that runs from the neck pocket to the bridge. Plus the maple top. In addition they added a pull knob to get both humbuckers in the middle position instead of both inner coils only. The BFR is fatter and more harmonically rich than the others.

I almost encouraged you specifically to stay out of this thread in my initial post LOL.I very quickly saw the Swiss Army knife of tones quality in the JPs. And I don't know if it was the amp I was test-driving with (EVH 5150III halfstack), but the piezo system in the JP sounds a lot more balanced than the one in the Duotone or the Parker Fly I had with piezos. I immediately fell in love with the overall feel of the guitar too.Must be cool. Must resist. Patience.-- The store had a BFR I picked up briefly. I was somewhat turned off by the finished neck (I like oil finishes) but the rest of the package was quite impressive.
silentman Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 SirDan should probably not reply either then.
SteveB Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I had a EBMM Silhouette special for quite a while. I liked everything about it except the fretboard width, it was just a bit too narrow for me so I traded it. Do the Petrucci's have the same fretboard width as the Silhouettes or is it wider?
silentman Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I'd venture a guess to say it's wider. I don't have both to compare, but have played a silo in the past.
edgar_allan_poe Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Jeff...there is a Pettrucci on TGP and the dude wants $1300 for it.

Do the Petrucci's have the same fretboard width as the Silhouettes or is it wider?I had a Silhouette Special for a short while and had the same reaction as you. Petrucci necks definitely have a wider fretboard. They're basically wide thin shredder necks. Petrucci had a line of signature RB-type Ibanez's so I assume the neck on his EBMM's was derived from those.-Austin
Devnor Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 That's radiance red for sure...I've got a Silo Bass in that color. Seems more sparkley in person. After 3 problematic EBMM guitars I was fairly certain that I was done with them but I still GAS for a 6 string Petrucci. Actually I had ordered a trans black BFR but the dealer shipped it to someone else who had ordered a t-shirt. After 3 weeks of waiting to get it back I just cancelled. It all worked out in the end because that funded my green flamed-body Cali. Here's mine....its a very nice guitar indeed!
Jeff R Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 Treble side toggle controls the electric guts.Bass side toggle is piezo in bridge, electric guts, or both.
Guest JackButler Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Jeff,My AND my kid both have matching Petrucci's and I will say this.. it is probably the most comfortable guitar/ergonomic guitar that I've ever played and the piezo blows everything else with a piezo away.. I don't even bring a real acoustic on a stage now..ever. Built like a tank and never an issue whatsoever. If I didn't have my Nocturne, it would be and was my number one/no questions ever guitar. My Nocturne was the my answer to a long long search for a better Cali' and I just dig the 27 frets way too much to be able to put her down.. but you could NOT possibly go wrong with the Petrucci. The upper horn toggle is piezo/electric or both.. the bottom toggle is the humbuckers with the middle position being the two inner coils tapped (sound nice and tight and snappy/funky when clean).. the knobs are volume, tone and coustic volume and iirc on those Special Editions there's also a couple of push/pull pot options for getting both hb's on at the same time too.edited to add: The BFRs have a mahogany neck vs the maple on the PET6s so thats why their finished and not oiled. Neck on the Petruccis is a 15 radius.. most other ebmm guitas are 10-12 radius.. the fingerboard is flat but there's a nice subtle curve to the back, so its not just a flat plank on both sides.
Steve Haynie Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 WHY do I click these threads!?Maybe you are a "dummy" like the rest of us!
edgar_allan_poe Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Kevin...do you still have the Jackson PC-1? If you need to get rid of it, drop me a line.
Feynman Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 All right, you GAS-inducing freaks. I've signed up at the EBMM forums and have been drooling over some JP6 pics. Looks like it has the versatility of my old Parkers while not looking like a guitar from an alien planet. Silentman sent me a very convincing PM about the greatness of these things which made it even worse...I know I'm going to end up buying one, and I'm going to blame you guys.
Guest JackButler Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 Kevin...do you still have the Jackson PC-1? If you need to get rid of it, drop me a line.I appreciate it.. but the Collins stays where it is! lol.. They changed the headstock and then discontinued that color (Euphoria) which was already the limited production color..but I DO remember you missing yours so if I ever get the itch to unload..you're the first to get the word.
