BubbaVO Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Please tell me that someone from the HFC just picked up this guitar at a silly low price:http://i15.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/df/e8/45dc_0.JPGhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A:IT&ih=012
atquinn Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Nice price, but I just wasn't feelin' it for some reason. Maybe it was the black color or the TOM bridge (I probably would have been all over it at that price if it had a sustain block). Looks like someone got a very nice guitar for an equally nice price.-Austin
Submariner85 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I have one exactly like it I got for 450 on Ebay. Here's mine
Submariner85 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I know. It's a Phantom same as in the listing.
kizanski Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 ...I probably would have been all over it at that price if it had a sustain block...True, only that wouldn't have been the price.these are not protosExactly.

Punkavenger Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 now HERES a proto ... visually the kahler doesn't bother me on this one ... we will see how it plays/sounds arriving on my doorstep in approx. 7 days ... an-ti-ci -pa-tion!
BubbaVO Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 That's bad assed, too.Can anyone explain to me the difference between Protoypes and Phantoms. Here are two guitars with the same body shape, pup configuration, but they're not the same model.I thought Phantoms had longer upper horns and an asymetric "booty". Ala the Glenn Tipton guitars.
Submariner85 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I'm far from being an expert on any Hamer guitar design or model but I was thinking the A5 is the one that Tipton has and this one is an A7?Not sure though.

Punkavenger Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I'm not really fond of the later prototype aberrations ... to me the original proto with the sustain block and mother bucker is perfect.someday I'd like to find an all original proto in a natural finish ... Oh, yes! it will be mine ...
BubbaVO Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 I absolutely love that shape. Of all the Hamer designs, it's my favorite. Too bad we're not seeing a resurgence of their original designs.
Punkavenger Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 a re issue of the original prototype would be awesome!
Bass Guy Dave Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I'll play, too. Wasn't the old Phantom A7 the synth one? I've got two of the 6-inline regular ones and I've always found this body shape really comfortable (mr first Hamer was my old red Cruisebass with the same shape and it totally sold me on the brand.) I got the '98 a few years ago in a trade from the Flametop Phantom custom from the same era. I adore it. Aside from an 8 or 12 string bass, an original Proto is the other "Must-have someday" Hamer for me. Surprising it's not still in the lineup. What a steal.
BubbaVO Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 I'll play, too. Awesome. Love that black with the pearl pick guard.
GusS Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 a re issue of the original prototype would be awesome! The black Phantom in this thread is a '97/'98 reissue of the original Prototype. Still available as a custom order if you want a sustain block on it.

Oh great ... there goes another $2200 Thanks for the info .... white with black binding, black hardware and matching headstock sound about right to you?
serial Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 The A5 was the production Phantom in the 80s with 3+3 heads from 1982-1984 then 6 in lines after that. The A7 was the synth version of the A5. The GT was the "Glenn Tipton" model with a single humbucker and master volume only that Glenn used onstage (all with 6 in line headstocks). The Phantom also came in a 12 string version. The "new" Phantom of the late 90s was actually just a recycled Prototype with a stop/tuna.All of the above rock-no question.
