Feynman Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I tire easily of most shredtastic recordings, but Guthrie Govan strikes me as different. Even in the midst of unfathomable playing he remains musical. I can't say I'm a fan of every track, but this album and some of his youtube clips have me floored."Waves" is pure genius, IMHFO.Get it! Give this man some money!
santellavision Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Damn, that guy can play. I just listened to all his You tube clips. It scares me that there are such great players out there that are virtually unknown.

Devnor Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 If you can handle pop-oriented stuff the GPS album isn't too bad
Jeff R Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I never heard of the guy 'cause I live under a rock. Just pulled up a few of his You Tube tracks.Fuck me. Running.
veatch Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Wow. Either makes you wanna practice 10 hours a day or quit. I'm too old to do either.
Jeff R Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Just noticed on the Larry Carlton-esque track how LITTLE he uses his pinky. This fucker is usually only playing to 75 percent of his potential.
atquinn Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Not sure why I haven't gotten this album yet. Great chops and tone. He kind of strikes me as a rock-ier Greg Howe. Voice sounds totally unlike his playing (to me)! -Austin
Arpeggiated Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I think he tries out-Vai Steve Vai as well in places. Been a huge fan of Guthrie for only a few months. My jaw dropped so hard when I first heard "Fives" that it dented the floor. That doesn't happen very often with me. I'm so freakin' jaded.
killerteddybear Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Two other guys to check out:John Czajkowski from Hectic Watermelon (San Diego - Los Angeles).Hectic Watermelon is playing "progressive Post-Zappa Commando-Fusion". Lots of odd tempos, absolute world class playing, and John (who writes the stuff) plays some brilliant stuff.Travis Larson from the Travis Larson Band (San Luis Obispo, Ca.). More straight ahead jazz-rock fusion, well done. I'm most impressed with TLB's bassist, Jennifer Young; she's about 100 pounds soaking wet, tiny hands (I checked) and she just rips on bass. I felt like selling my gear after seeing her play!Side note: John, Travis and Jennifer all play MusicMan...
Guest JackButler Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Guthrie is a monster and a REALLY nice guy too! EXTREMELY polite. Erotic Cakes was done with the Cornform amps folks and right after it was release, someone broke into the Cornford warehouse and lifted almost ALL of the copies that they had just gotten duped and wrapped! He's also a regular columnist for Guitar Techniques magazine. Started out on an Ibanez RG and a PRS 24.. has a couple of 335s and a Tele or two..but the last 2 years or so has been using Suhr.. he's the reason for the floyded 24 fretter Suhrs.
