santellavision Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 This popped up in my ebay saved searches this morning. It could've been nice, except for the horrible neck break.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ME:B:SS:US:1123
kizanski Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 That's the only red '78 I've ever seen.Too bad about the headstock...
Guest pirateflynn Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 It's a '79....... and it's a mess all the way around.
MCChris Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Not the prettiest fix you'll see, but Tim Schroeder is indeed a highly regarded repairman in these parts.
santellavision Posted May 30, 2008 Author Posted May 30, 2008 If if looks like that now, I wonder how bad it was before!
kizanski Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 The ad says '78 (twice), the first number on the serial looks like a 7, and the last four numbers on the serial seem to fall in the 1979 range, so I have no idea wtf it is.
serial Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Definitely NOT a 77 and most likely not a 78, but the seller has so much bad info on there, it's hard to tell. From the pics, I'd say 79 no question. Forgot to look and can't access pics now (blocked), but if it's a 3 piece neck (which it should be by the last four on the serial #), it sure as hell ain't a 77, 78 or early 79.
kizanski Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Looks like the seller revised the ad a little bit!Not to the point where it makes any kind of sense, though.
GusS Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 it was initally listed as a 77 with a serial number starting with 7, and a 76 pot, now it apparently is a 78 with a serial number starting with 8 and has a late 79 3-piece neck!

Makes perfect sense!Looks like he had a little trouble installing the '79 neck!
veatch Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 The listing has been revised quite a bit...The initial listing had only one picture of the front of the guitar (beautiful color), had a $500 starting price, no mention of any repairs, and was listed as a '76.
flattop Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Too bad... poor guitar- tough life it's had.... ouchThis thing dont add up,its got Schaller tuners all 78 models had Grovers and some 79,s had grovers as standard too.I had a 79 with serial number 1432 and it had Grovers this is an earlier serial number with the later Schalllers?????????Replacement neck?? altered Serial number????

kizanski Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 What? No bids?"(The case alone is worth $100.00.)"C'mon, guys! It's like getting the guitar for $400! (That's what I call "guitar math").
bubs_42 Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Man I would love to have the case for my 79. That head repair looks bad. Well case, tuner's, a pot, Sustain block. The math looks pretty good.
flattop Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 All Sunbursts had Grovers until 1980.Yeah thought that was case, but if it was an 80 it would have the shorter headstock???? None of it adds up.This doesnt look like a genuine guitar
serial Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 The headstock is correct for a '79. Serial # looks to me like "9 13**" Looks like the heel took a shot. Don't care what he says. $500 is not outrageous, particulary w/case, but this guy's info is totally whacked. If it is in the 9 1300s (and the finish is original), it's one of 15 in cherry trans out of that 100 with dots. A few others had crowns and two more dot ones had yellow number stamps.#9 1347 was a dot neck sunburst Sunburst. #9 1344 and #9 1345 were cherry dot necks. Looks more like #9 136* to me if so, it could be #9 1362, #9 1366 or most likely #9 1367.Geek mode off.

The math looks pretty good.Don't forget the WCR pickups. If I needed any of the above mentioned hardware (and a case), I'd do $500 for this. Then I'd strip everything off of it and get what I could just for the wood.-Kizanski: Guitar Math a Specialty.
