santellavision Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hiram was one of my favorite 'unknown' players. He is most notable for his time on The David Letterman Show and work with David Sanborn. His work can be heard on Steely Dan's Gaucho, Paul Simon's One Trick Pony, Sting's Nothing Like the Sun (solo on the cover of Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing), Billy Joel's The Stranger. He also did work for Marcus Miller, Carla Bley and Miles Davis. I have most of his solo albums. ------------------- I played bass in my high school rock band (like a million other teenage boys). One day our guitarist, who was slightly older and looked like Eric Clapton, passed out while in the middle of the solo on “Mississippi Queen" (he said later that he was “tired"). Immediately, ten girls jumped up onto the stage, stroking, consoling, and otherwise “reviving him". At that precise moment I decided to switch to guitar. -Hiram Bullock ------------------- We'll all miss him. P.S. Here's a nice link to Hiram jammin' with SRV.
SteveB Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hiram and Jaco, Live in NYC is still one of my all time fav discs. RIP.
burningyen Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 His Little Wing solo with Sting really blew me away at the time. Sad news.
cmatthes Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Very premature, as these things often are. I remember watching him on the old Letterman show in the pre/during Sid days. Great player.
Jeff R Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Possibly the first significant guitar player to shove humbuckers in a Strat as well. I read on another board I frequent that Hiram says he bought this 60s Strat in 1971 with the humbuckers already installed, beating out Gilmour (1972) and EVH (1977) in their debuts of humbucker-equipped strats.
santellavision Posted July 29, 2008 Author Posted July 29, 2008 Here's another of my 'unknown' axe slingers. The also late Dominic Troiano. I remember him playing a Tele with a neck and middle HB, around 1970 also.
hamerican gigolo Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 I remember staying up late at night watching the " World's Most Dangerous Band " when i was in high school, knowing full well that i had to go to school the next day. His solo on Sting's version of " Little Wing " is transcendant. R.I.P. I hate f#$%in' drugs!
Brooks Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hiram and Jaco, Live in NYC is still one of my all time fav discs. RIP.i have that one. cool how he doubles jacos solo on "teen town", wow. rip.
MCChris Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 I hate f#$%in' drugs!Cancer is what took him, apparently.
alantig Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 I hate f#$%in' drugs!Cancer is what took him, apparently. One article I read said cancer, another said he had one final binge. Who knows for sure?I had forgotten he played on Sting's "Little Wing". Excellent version.Alan
tombo Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hiram was one of my favorite guitar players and biggest influences (ask Ted). He was just here last winter for the Tokyo Jazz Festival with Mike Stern and Chris Minh Doky. He had been through a lot in his life and when he kicked drugs he gained a lot of weight. He looked nothing like the pic that Jeff R posted. That was the "old Hiram." I'm surprised so many HFCers here knew about him and liked him. One of my favorite Hiram moments was when he appeared on SNL with Eddie Murphy. They played an American Legion hall or something like that. Hiram and Eddie had afro wigs on, Hiram with his strat and a Pignose amp. They played "Kill The White People" to a reggae beat. R.I.P. Hiram.
santellavision Posted July 30, 2008 Author Posted July 30, 2008 Yeah, many knew of him. I probably saw him live 4-5 times including seeing the original Late Night w/Letterman show in NY.I have all his solo records. I just dug his tone. The way he picked right at the bridge for some funky harmonic sounds.
Jimbilly Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I think he played on an Al Jarreu CD I have, one of my favorite solos if I'm remembering correctly.
