Thought you guys might like this on tubes.....

Eurotubes

+1 (with a bunch of zeros) Bob is the most patient guy you'll ever meet, and with a massive depth of knowledge. He answers the phone/email and loves to talk tubes and tone. He can help you make really informed decisions on which tubes to use for your particular application and seems to have a handle on about every amp out there. Check out the videos (e.g., how to bias your own amp) and articles on all kinds of tube-related information. :P

Never been a fan of JJs'. power tubes aren't terrible but really dislike the preamps.

I kinda' disagree. The JJ's EL84's are really good and dependable. Preamps, not so much.

All depends on the amp, the pickups and pedals you hit them with, biasing, etc. The original intent was (I think) to just give some basic descriptive info about the tubes themselves.

The 6V6's are pretty much the best out there, too, as far as new production.

IMHO, the EL-34s and preamps are solid, but not spectactular.

Recently got some KT-77s, which are supposed to be pretty darn good, but haven't installed them yet.

Okay, excuse the naivete expressed earlier: what preamp tubes should I be looking at?

As Thundernotes pointed out, it depends on what amp, etc. Do you have a specific one, or more than one, in mind?

It's not that I've had any problems with any of the JJs'. They seem to be pretty darn reliable from the couple of 12ax7s' I've had. I just don't really care for the sound of them. I like an agressive sounding 12ax7, sylvania, ge, JAN nos, etc. Mullard gets rave reviews, I didnt' really care for the sound of them either, too smooth for me. I think I have some JJ el84s in my TopHat(haven't looked in there for awhile) much better than the sovteks, sound wise.

Wow, I don't see how anyone could have a negative review of JJ's or Bob. I've been to his shop a few times, he's worked on my amp, and the JJ's brought it to life!

I use the 6V6's and high gain 12AX7's, and I've had great luck with JJ's!
