Guest pirateflynn Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 What does a SG sound like? Opinions on The Sunburst sound ..... SG or Les Paul?
atquinn Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 This should be an interesting one! Given the construction, I don't see how it could sound closer to an LP, but I've never played an SG, LP or Sunburst, so what the hell do I know -Austin
Disturber Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I have two '79's. One sound pretty much like an old LP, very pearly gates - B Gibbons like. The other one sounds more similar to an old SG. There is a noticeable difference on the two, go figure... They are both great.
Sam Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I've had a Gibby SG in my arsenal for the last decade or so. I can't compare it with a Sunburst, though it's worth pointing out that none of the set neck guitars I've had over the years (Lesters, McCartys, Studios etc) sound much like it. That thin body makes for an inherently distinctive (biting) tone.
Rhys Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I've always thought my 1982 Special (not much difference construction-wise than a Sunburst) sounds like an SG on steroids. It's certainly closer in tone to an SG than a Les Paul, which is no bad thing IMO.

flattop Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Dont think the Sunburst sounds like a Les Paul at allDoesnt have the bottom end grunt of a Gibbo,it does have lot more 'Snap' with stronger Attack to the notes though.Studio Custom is the closest Hamer to a L.P. i.m.o.

I never hear anybody talk about the 'SG' tone so I was curious what you guys think? As an example, I like Tony Iomni's tone better than Jimmy Page's (LP) tone. It sounds more like a LP! I've been known to say that I can get a good LP tone out of a Sunburst but maybe it's a SG tone?

I had a pretty convincing Sabbath tone with an Eclipse through a Matchless Spitfire. Really!!
bubs_42 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Hey you lucky guy's. I just spent some time with my 70 Darkburst, 58 Reissue, and SG Reissue VOS. They are different in the spectrum of "Thickness" in the tone. The LP was a little more "Open" than the Sunburst. The Sunburst was "Beafier" just a tad more bottom end, but they just can't do the Neck pickup Sound of an LP. The SG had more "Highend" than the other two but still had good midrange. All three were great sounding guitars. The SG had Pafs, the Sunburst had Stock Dimarzio's Pafs, and the LP had Burst Buckers #1,#2. Anyone has a question more specific I'll try to answer it. My think with SG's and will most Gibsons is you got to weed out the good ones Tonal Wise. I have played 3 Les Pauls in that I would consider owning out of a ton of them. I know were the 3rd one is and its the 58 that I just played. Chopping at the bid. Its a 58 Vos in Icetea, but a plaintop. Onlything holding me back. The SG's can be Heavy don't let them fool you. Edit, Sorry if there is any Grammer issues. Gotta go to work...d
velorush Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 My think with SG's and will most Gibsons is you got to weed out the good ones Tonal Wise.I had a Norlin SG back in the mid-80's, a '73 - the ones where the fretboard came to the neck pickup instead of having that little extension (like this Standard, only with a Bigsby). It was NOT a great or really even good sounding guitar, so much so that I have never once GASSED for an SG since. A friend at the same time had a late 60's SG with T-Tops and it absolutely killed.I have played 3 Les Pauls in that I would consider owning out of a ton of them. I know were the 3rd one is and its the 58 that I just played. Chopping at the bid. Its a 58 Vos in Icetea, but a plaintop. Onlything holding me back.I love those all-business plain tops.
Guest pirateflynn Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 The Sunburst was "Beafier" just a tad more bottom end ...HA!You don't hear that opinion very often. I still am convinced that I get a 'good' LP tone out of a Sunburst. Definitely, my favorite guitars!

I think the Sunburst does a Hell of a Humbucker Rock Tone. It just can't pull off the LP Neck Tone Stock. Those old Sunburst are a plank of Mahogany with a pretty top, that doesn't contribute much to the tone IMHO. SO you get a wonderfull full warm tone. Combined with the Paf in the bridge and the Sustainblock is were the touch of Glass comes from. It equals out to a well balanced, players guitar. That is why I have 3. I would by another one if the right color and top came about in a heartbeat. All we need is just a few more guy's Mr. Flynn and we could do a HFC run of Sunbursts...

Guest pirateflynn Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 The neck tone is divine, IMO. I have to work at the bridge tone a bit more. A little pickup adjustment has done the trick in most cases.

I think I have the Bridge Sound down, but with the Dimarzio PAF, I can't get the push and clarity that I want in the neck position. I'm trying, and the Darkburst is a very good sounding Sunburst. Actually the 81 that I sold had a great sound out of both the bridge and the neck. The neck was actually louder. I just didn't get along with the neck. Little narrow more like a Strat, that an LP.Your making me regret not buying that Black Sunburst you sold.
