JimHalinda Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Mine is stock, and the rotary acts just like a 5-way on a strat with HSS confguration - Bridge HB / HB + Bridge SC / Bridge SC alone / both SCs / neck SC.
JimHalinda Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 ...it's only 2 pickups at the bridge, a humbucker and single coil together in one mounting ring....
bubs_42 Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Yep the 90's guitars are a JB and a HMR1 in the bridge and an HMR1 in the neck position. Go all the way back to 81 and it was a Dimarzio PAF and Dimarzio single, going forward they were Slammers.
bubs_42 Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 If you looking for a new bridge pickup to go in your Phantom, please consider the Phat Cat. The more I play my #1 the more I think my second Phantom needs the same set up.
bubs_42 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Please stay seated, I'm hearing that I may be able to add to this thread soon. Oh, I've been waiting for this one! We're getting closer....
Stike Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Please stay seated, I'm hearing that I may be able to add to this thread soon. Oh, I've been waiting for this one! We're getting closer.... Safe arrival in Nashville?

mathman Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 I gigged with my Phantom Custom Friday and Saturday, and hosted an open stage Sunday - again I am surprised at what a tone monster this one is!As discussed somewhere on this forum (if not this thread), this guitar is very bright, so I keep the tone control at around 5, and really noticed how I can use it to fine tune the balance between mids and highs - I'd almost call it a 'voice' control, I love it!The (stock) pickups are a bit hotter than I'd like, I'd lower them, except the neck pickup comes off its mounting screws before I can get it low enough! Through trial and error I've gotten it as low as it'll go, and then balanced the other two to match, output-wise.But that's OK too - I just use the volume knob when I want to back off on the power a bit, then tweak tone to taste - it feels good to be using those knobs, really opens up the already wide range of tones in this beast!Incidentally, my band plays 70s and 80s classic rock and pop, mixed with a few current tunes and a smattering of country (not my thing, but the single coils give me all the twang I want too!).Sunday was an open stage and among other things I ended up sitting in on three Sabbath tunes (NIB, Fairies Wear Boots and War Pigs), and I could just let the JB roar... again fine tuning with the tone control gave great results.I feel like I'm driving a high performance car with this thing, which I suppose would make Jol smile. My backup, a '96 Jimmy Page Les Paul, sat unused all weekend....end gush.JimEdited to add: there is something special going on when I use the bridge HB and SC together.... I'm tempted to try leaving it there all night and just use vol and tone controls to taste....You perfectly described everything I love about this guitar.

Safe arrival in Nashville? Arrived yes, should be getting cracked open today. So a prototype with sustain block and a big neck, I'd be willing to go over market price on that. Who should I contact, Murkat, Shishkov, or Dantzig. Of course, there is a custom "MIII" and a custom "Newport" I want. I need a promotion at work ($).

BIG neck not exactly, 90's Medium neck on this one. I hope that one day I can order the next version of this guitar, but push the envelope further to make it everything is could be. What you need is a Donor Phantom, a Sustainblock along with some inspiration. Mukat and Stike do amazing work for me everytime. #1 #2 in the works. http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/60356-ntl-special-phantom-haps/#entry748597
bcsride Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 ^^Right, but by the time I have a "new neck" added I might as well have the whole guitar done custom? I'm not sure If I'm willing to have the thing done up custom (paint, work, bridge, etc.) unless the neck is in the ball park of a "modern vintage" or a Warmoth '59. If I can find a bargain with a broken headstock, maybe that would work.
bubs_42 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 well if I remember correctly someone has a body floating around here......
JimHalinda Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I remember the ad copy for the Prototype saying it had a treble bleed on the volume pot - anybody know why the Phantom Customs don't have it?I wish mine did... Bubs, did you add one to yours to make it more like a Prototype?
bubs_42 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 No treble bleed on any of my former or current Proto/Phantoms. I was going to add one to my current Phantom but have not got around to it. I like the way the Phatcat Rolls off but not the single so I just let it be. I did change the cap to shave off a bit of high end and the guitar sounds great but the Middle Position no longer sounds the same when the tone knob is rolled off. It was a trade off that I'm currently just living with. I also tried to change the Tone pot to a lower K before I swapped out the cap but none of those options even sound remotely good. I use the Tone knob set between 8 and 4 depending on what i'm doing. It is easier to shave off a bit of high end than to try to add it.A couple HFC'er have mentioned to me that they would like to put in a C/Ordered Shishkov. If that ever happens we should collectively do it and have a small run done. Maybe that would save us some money.IMHO, I am a fan of the Large Vintage Carve Necks but I believe they do not fit the Prototype.
velorush Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 No treble bleed on my '83 Phantom and the electronics were pristine (so it never had it).I've only used a treble bleed circuit once - it's currently in my Strat and if I can get up the motivation to pull the pickguard and fire up the iron I won't be able to get that thing out of there soon enough. It has changed my much-used Volume control into some sort of Volume / High-Pass-Filter amalgam that renders the control completely useless for my purposes.I'd be all about a run of guitars with Prototype-styled body, Vintage-Carve style neck and especially with a sustain-block style bridge (all hyphenated to be sensitive to copyrights, patents, etc.).

bubs_42 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I have gotten in trouble about this before. But I would opt out of the 4 digit headstock.
velorush Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 If I had my druthers, I'd really prefer the Dan Armstrong headstock (via Google Image): But I wouldn't mind the original headstock at all. I think I'm in your camp on the four-digit headstock on the double cut body (should I hide now?).
bubs_42 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 IF an Electraglid'ish guitar was made with that kind of headstock'ish look I would buy it. I have a 3 guitar case at home that I store my guitars in and I am limiting my guitar stash to that case. I would have a hard time turning one of those down. The Shishkov Ultimate doesn't fit. LOOPHOLE!
bubs_42 Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 What is it about the Sustainblock that amplifies the sound. Using a Phatcat in #1 and then I used a PG in #2 the bridge tones are huge, snappy with the right amount of bottom end and crisp highs. Only thing I can think of that I would like is like a Vintage Modern Switch. Something to make the guitar a little softer then in vintage mode. Kind of like when you bypass the tone circut but go the opposite way.
