Armitage Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Where's the one with the P90 in the neck. I always thought that'd be a tone Frankenstein!

sonny o'hoolighan Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 I've had this 90s Phantom for around three weeks now, and it is becoming one of my favorites. This thing ROCKS, it has a great neck, and it is comfortable (for me at least) to play. Very fun guitar. I know the pups are Duncans, anyone know which ones?
bubs_42 Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 JB in the Bridge (If its Stock) and two OEM Duncans made for Hamer. They read around 8k output and read HMRI on the back.
bubs_42 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 BUMP for the Most Under Appreciated Guitar in HAMER HISTORY!Good, that just means more for me.
belfegore Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 For those who like their gear well used and battle scarred here are some pics of my originally arctic white Prototype, built 1981, bought second hand in Andy's on Denmark St in 1983. During the 80's and early 90s it has seen the filthiest clubs and squat parties in London, it has lived in places that were so rife with damp deforming the neck so much that the strings were flat on the fretboard. Through all this time it has given perfect service, one refretting and regularly applied fresh strings were all it asked for. Still plays and sounds great. Funnily enough, while the laquer was wearing away in the area where the arm rests during play, a chequer-board layer was faintly visible for a little while. The pick-up combo is now consisting of a Seymour Duncan P90 and mini Humbucker. The bridge has been re-chromed (was black). Everything else is original.
Hamerica Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 "The good ones get played" - BCR GregVery nice to see an original relic. Looks like it was found in CBGB's after a band left it there in the basement. Cool!Hamerica

Hamerica Thanks for the warm welcome Just found the original warranty card, no idea how that survived, has sadly run out now thou'
bubs_42 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Is that a P90 Wedged in there? That there is AWESOME!!!!
belfegore Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Is that a P90 Wedged in there? That there is AWESOME!!!! Seymour Duncan P90, indeed, Sir! Was also done by Andy's in Denmark St, London. They had to take the soap bar cover off to fit it, did a nice job on the pick up mount, which is still the original. Would have recommended their services had they not lost the truss rod cover during set up.
DBraz Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 There is something about a good mahogany body and a triplebucker. I was talking about this the other night. It's almost like having the wah half cocked. A wonderful tone.I love my Phantom Custom.

I have to credit Gene for this great shot! ">http://http://s58.photobucket.com/user/bubs_42/media/Guitars/HFC2012SparklePhantom_zps2e06f10e.jpg.html'>

Great minds think alike, I'd say Actually the P90 is a natural choice for the music I am playing. I am looking for a replacement of the mini-humbucker though, was talked into it but will try something else s/t.
bubs_42 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 What are you looking for a single coil or a Humbucker? Balance is key IMHO they have to work well together. The four sounds in a Prototype (If not modified), Humbucker, Hum/Single, Single and Hum/Single with the tone knob rolled off.
belfegore Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 What are you looking for a single coil or a Humbucker? Balance is key IMHO they have to work well together. The four sounds in a Prototype (If not modified), Humbucker, Hum/Single, Single and Hum/Single with the tone knob rolled off. Currently I got a range of options with the extra Humbucker with the out-of-phase switch in the volume knob. The idea was to have a choice of sounds for recording different types of songs. However, this just didn't work out in practice, none of the sounds are particular great, I always end up going back to the P90 sound anyway. So I would now like to go for something a bit far out, such as a souped up Strat single coil, which might give me a brighter sound alternative. It's gonna be trial and error, but I guess that is part of the fun
bubs_42 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Souped up single coil, I'd try a Rio Grande of some sort. I prefer my SD Singlecoil but it is the stock pickup that was in the Proto/Phantom. Nothing I found in SD's lineup now compares to it. Worlds your oyster if your not strapped to needing one without the bezel.

I am sure even after 30-odd years that old relic will come up with some surprises. Hoping to create a proper monster, eventually!
burningyen Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 You'll need something with the girth to keep up with the P-90 and to match up well with the 500k pots. The DiMarzio Virtual Vintage series PUs might be a good choice.

mathman Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 The tone knob on my Proto II does amazing things with all the pickups but especially the combinations.
