GusS Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 can yall recommend one or two? All i want to do is record 8 tracks simultaneously on a computer with uSB 2.0, no firewire. thxcheaper end of the spectrum, bang for the buck etc
mathman Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I've always preferred firewire but this may be a good deal. You'll have to scope it out to be sure. I haven't used it myself.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3043..._USB_Audio.htmlthere is also this but look for it somewhere else than the apple store.http://store.apple.com/us/product/TQ890ZM/A
GusS Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 thanks - why have you preferred firewirewhy do neither of these have 8 input jacks of the same type, side by side?dumb question - i'm trying to dump some stuff on tape .. not record microphones.. do i still need to worry about preamps?
mathman Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Firewire always worked better on the mac for me. USB has gotten much better over the years. Exactly what are you trying to record from and what do you hope to it into?
Ethan Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Presonus Firepod is really nice but is firewire, not USB...sorry dude.http://www.presonus.com/products/Detail.aspx?ProductId=3
GusS Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 record from 8 track tape onto 8 tracks on computer in one shot.isnt firewire dead or dying? do new laptops even come with a firewire port?
kenjones Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I have never used one of these but it looks really cool: Zoom's website $399
tomteriffic Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I have never used one of these but it looks really cool: Zoom's website $399 Just got one recently. It works as advertised, sounds pretty neutral/transparent and has a lot of capabilities, maybe more than what Gus needs. But you can't beat the price I'll be using 2, lashed together for 16 tracks in one shot to capture the audio for a live DVD we're shooting. Straight to a memory card, no moving parts. Then you can USB it to the computer and just drag the tracks across and bring them up in your audio editor of choice.
geoff_hartwell Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 record from 8 track tape onto 8 tracks on computer in one shot. isnt firewire dead or dying? do new laptops even come with a firewire port? I take it you're a PC? Firewire 800 comes standard on every Macbook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro. The Macbooks use FW 400. For 8 track interfaces, the Apogee is at the top of fidelity (and price...and worth it), but I've also liked working with Firepods - I have two - both bought separately for only $250 apiece! My buddy Andy Aledort's new live album was recorded using two FP10's daisy-chained for 16 tracks, and it sounds great. (apparently even Joe Satriani said so!) If you're archiving an old project for a mix or just posterity, depending on how much material there is, you might even consider spending a few hours for a transfer at a reasonably priced studio rather than investing in one-time use hardware. Best of luck, Geoff
mathman Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 My old four track died and I wanted to get some tracsk off of it. I first brought in the first side as stereo and split them into dual mono with peak. I then brought in the second side and reversed it and then split into dual tracks. I then brought each track separately into garageband or logic, aligned them and then was able to mix them using garageband or logic. Took a bit more time but I wasn't sitting there watching it record.

GusS Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 the fact that it can record onto SD cards is particulary amazing for me cause it means that i dont gotta bring my tape deck at home or my desktop pc to my jam space. This is totally what the doctor ordered but didn't even bother telling me!! Thank you all for your help.
