I went to see Cheap Trick at the Illinois state fair and what an awesome time it was.

But better even is watching from backstage.

But more importantly to me...

I was able to talk to Tom for about 30 minutes before the show and about 20 minutes after the show.

Very cool! Looks like a blast!

Nice shots from the meet-n-greet; smart thinking to hand the camera to an accomplice. Stage photography in limited lighting is no easy task; I've been doing the same for the past few Pat Metheny tours. What were you shooting with shooter?

cool !! I'm going to see them on the 26th in NJ PNC art center..

So is Tom a good kisser?

I knew someone was going to say that.

Head East was playing about 40 feet away from us at that time so it wasn't that easy to hear each other for a few minutes.

I think he was wearing Hikarate..

Damn! Head East is still around? I remember them from back when I lived in IL.

Roger the Keyboard player is the only original member.

Didn't Head East have like twenty members on stage at one time? I vaguely remember a video where they did their hit single and since I'd just quit a band that had that in the rotation (was actually one of the more fun tunes to play bass on), I watched the whole thing.

Hmmm, I could be WAY off base though.

Hey Jim - did Tom say anything about a new album? I think the last one took five years, so maybe we shouldn't expect anything until 2007. Of course, they may have decided to become a full-time nostalgia act and give up on new stuff. I hope not..

I didn't ask about any new albums. We mostly talked about gear and his Waterstone basses. He no longer plays Chandler's. I'm a bit reluctant to say too much because I don't want to mis-quote him.

But one interesting fact though that Tom confirmed is:

That fat sounding Quad bass you here on "Live At Budakon" is actually overdubbed in the studio because the bass tracks did not record in the live recordings. I have heard this before but I hear a lot of things that prove to not always be true.

Where is the Illinois State Fair? Springpatch?

I saw Cheap Trick from the front row of the Heart of Illinois Fair (Peoria) in about 1981, the first of many times I've seen them over the years.
