NHC - Metallica Film Review

Although I've never been a 'fan' per-say, I've always dug the band, so when a friend handed me "Some Kind of Monster" I figured I had an evening to kill, and it's gotta be better than television, so what the hell. Here are my thoughts on it:

* Lars Ulrich needs his ass kicked.......daily!

* I just love James Hetfield and wish him the god-damned best even if it comes to no more band.

* They all have way too much money.

* I had gear overload watching the film.

* Robert Trujillo F****** RULES!

* It may help to go into the studio with...Oh, I don't know, perhaps a shred of an idea as to what you may record.

* Kirk Hammett looked 20 years older...twenty years ago! How the hell does that happen?

* West Coast Choppers is soooo three years ago!

* The fact that I'm writing this at all means I need a 40 thosand dollar a month shrink to set life goals with.

I agree with your review sir, although I have been a fan since '85 or '86 and a stauch supporte of their "stylistic changes" in the 90's I have to admit their last real good album was the Black album. Oh well, maybe they will morph into a thrash band again someday.

I picked it up the other night to give it another shot. I saw it in the theater. I dig it. I think Metallica is great. I have loved them for years and years since I was a little kid. I don't like their new album but the film was interesting and there was so much gear to look at. They have 600 guitars combined! Some amps i've never even heard of. I think Lars is funny, and Kirk is the intellegent one. My favorite part is when Kirk gets pissed about the "no solos" thing, which I completely agree with him on. I thought it was cool and I will check it out once in a while. New album was crap though, mainly because of that damned snare sound.

Wives and children don't belong in the studio.

Parents' opinions should have no bearing on the music.

The "lyrics by committee" approach sucks.

Being "scared" of everything is no way to go through life.

But it's worked for me so far. Keeps me on my toes, you know. LOL

On the movie, I've only seen trailers and bits from a special CD my wife got me for Christmas. I'd love to see it, because that stuff kind of intrigues me.

I agree on the assessment of the bassist. When I first saw him on some Ozzy concert special I thought, "Who is this animal?"

If they hadn't already lost me back before they ever started covering Bob Seger songs, they definitely would have lost me when Hetfield sang "I want my anger to be healthy." Bringing your therapy lessons to your lyrics is not metal.

i lost interest in metallica years ago, but enjoyed this film, kinda like rubbernecking at a car crash.

the best part was the bassist auditions. guys looking stressed trying to keep up (w/ a pick), then rob turillio comes in and blows 'em all away (w/ his fingers). he is a badass, technically way better than the rest of the band and all their ex-bassists (yes, cliff too). check out his work w/ "infectious grooves".

Thank you Mattb! I've tried numerous times to listen to st anger hoping it will get better but it just stinks. The damn coffee can snare sound makes me wanna throw the disc out the window. The dvd is actually easier to listen to because the snare sounds marginally better but James voice is just horrible. The whole film was enlightening in many ways but really ended up making me lose alot of respect for what was one of my favorite bands for a very long time. It really took them off the pedestal that I put them on as idols and showed them for who they are (the half of the band with the decision making power are a couple of pricks). They need to fire the shrink, fire bob rock, fall off the wagon, lose the money, and make an album where they're pissed off again. Robert Trujillo is indeed a monster player though and I hope people don't listen to st. anger and think he must be why it sucks because he's the only difference in the band. I still can't help wondering if they didn't intentionally put out a shitty album just to screw with people that illegally download their music. I just can't for the life of me think that anyone in the band could sit down with those songs and think "yea, that rocks".

I watched it when it first came out, my singer is their biggest FAN. I was a fan of theirs back in the 80's, all the way up to the Black album. My impression of the movie was that all of them, even Newsted are PUSSIES.

Yeah, all the old members came across as whiny bitches ;) They redeemed themselves somewhat in my eyes when they cut Robert in as a real member of the band right off the bat. Sure, they are loaded and can afford it, but rock and roll history is full of egomaniacal prima donnas who would have paid him $20 a night and figured he should count himself lucky just to share the stage with them.

I did think it was funny how they were amazed at how fast he could play with just his fingers and no pick. Duh. Kinda makes you wonder what rock they were living under.

I hated that knucklehead coach idiot.

I don't see that he helped them, except that they all hated him by the end.

Lars is an idiot.

James deserves big respect for putting his family before the band, and his recovery as his main priority. If you haven't been there, you have no idea how tough it is.

Trujillo is the MOFO in that band.

Kurt seems insipid and unimportant.

Bob Rock came across quite well, to me.

I still think the only cool Metallica i early Metallica.

My opinions are useless, anyway.
