Refinish Question

Hey there!!! Lack of cash is making me think of this option... I really want a USA Hamer Standard but I am lacking the funds,, so I am thinking of getting a Korean Slammer Standard, I would like to get it painted/refinished in the GREAT Rick Neilsen checkerboard pattern. About how much would this cost??? Also who can I get to do this for me???

Thanks for your patience and time!!!

I think it would cost many times more than that actual guitar. In the end, you'd just have a $150 guitar that you spent $1,000 to paint.

I got a quote a few years ago from a finish guy that was more than a USA Standard sells for. I've gotten far more reasonable quotes since then, but it isn't going to be cheap - there's a lot of masking work involved in doing that.

You could also try checking out a Motorcycle or Auto custom shop in your area that might do it for less.

There's always the DIY route - if you have the time, patience and a place to spray it, that might be an alternative.

If you can find a painter that will agree to let you participate, you can keep the cost reasonable.

I had this done last year and did all masking between coats myself.

As cool as the checkerboard pattern is, it would ruin the resale on a Standard, you may as well do it on an import... IMHO anyways.

Very time consuming (read expensive) thing to do. I suppose the best way would be to buy one in black, i'm pretty sure they do the imports black, and then get someone to just do the front face which would be much quicker (read cheaper) and it wouldn't look bad at all opossed to getting a sunburst one, for example, where you'd have to paint the whole thing.

You might be able to find checkerboard pattern static-cling plastic sheet. Cut to size with holes for the top-mounted hardware and you've got the look for a few dollars.

That's what I was thinking. And when you're tired of it, peel it off and try another one.

Both good ideas. I've done a couple, it's tedious with a capital OUS.

Thanks for all the replies!! The Axe Wrap looks like my best option,,,but I am getting a feeling of focusing on saving for the US Standard would be best,, wish me luck!!!!
