Opened for Vixen

Vixen played the main, local rock club and we opened for them Friday night. That was a fun experience for this novice. I walked in to see a few girls and a guy jamming some blues on the stage. The guy was on keyboards. I didn't recognize them (this gets funny) so I just assumed there was a blues jam when I showed up for our load-in. But, as I sat there with our gear I realized that this was actually Vixen that I was watching. The girls seemed cute, loose clothing, no makup, the bass player was wearing glasses with her hair back. I walked up and started talking with them as they unplugged and found them to be very nice ladies. I really liked the bass player, as she just had a real warm personality. They headed out and we started to set up for our sound check.

Our set was our best ever. Very tight now. Sound was great and the crowd reaction was very good. Excellent stage, too.

Well, after our set we waited around for about 45 minutes for Vixen to take the stage. Out came these hotties with their instruments in hand. Didn't recognize them from the soundcheck. Well, the librarian-looking bass player, Lynn, stepped on the stage right in front of me, looked at me and flashed a big smile. She looked so good...and so different. Makup, hair hanging down. I couldn't help but just smile and wink. She played really well too. I got a kick out of the transformation. They sounded great.

I just saw some recent pics, only Jan is still in the band. The rest; Roxy, Share and Janet are gone.

That's like Pete willis getting a bunch of guys to play and calling it Def Leppard.

Made me laugh. Where is the "other" Vixen? Oh...that's right...there is no other Vixen. I've heard that comment a few times from people and I still can't really respond to it. What am I supposed to say? What am I supposed to call them? Geez...it's a good thing we didn't open for "Journey", or "Whitesnake".

Yeah, it was a great time. Really enjoyed the gig. If I wasn't married I woulda found some trouble. But, that's true of any gig we play.

I don't wanna pee on the gig, it's cool. I'll bet you guys SMOKED 'em.

I played a few shows with the original Vixen "back in the day", when all you pups were sucking on mom's teat. They were good, with the extra guitarist behind the curtain and all the extra background singers....

Ah, don't trip on it, Abaco. Greg dissed me when I opened for BOC in '00. Something to the effect of: "Myself, every one I know, their grandma and my UPS driver have all opened for BOC." I didn't take it personally and the air remained in my sails. We DID destroy the crowd that night, though!

It's just his way...

Naw, it was a comment about how many bands have opened for them, not a qualitative criticism. You guys are getting good gigs.

My problem is the bands that are still out there selling themselves as what they WERE, not what they ARE.

So is Gibson Guitars.

Still, it doesn't mean you can't at least just say "Damned good on ya!" and wait until the folks have had a while to come down from their high before you start ragging on bands past their prime. Just start a new thread next week or something, but making that comment now is nothing more than harshing Abaco's mellow.

Personally, I'm stoked for them and I really like to hear people who enjoyed the hell out of their gigs. Reminds me that making music is satisfying on very many levels.

As for bands that are no longer themselves, I just saw the Rock Never Stops tour.

I know almost nothing about Firehouse other than they put on a good show, and I should check out an album.

Quiet Riot had two of the "original" members, the bass player who actually played on the original albums, and a new guitar player. To me it was an authentic enough band, and they were good. Everyone had a lot of fun watching them. Kevin Dubrow looked a lot like Rod Stewart for some reason. Without the original "photo" line-up, they were still Quiet Riot as far as I'm concerned.

Ratt seemed the most like a tribute band. Only two original members were in the band: Warren DeMartini and Bobby Blotzer. The bass player, Robbie Crane, had worked for Ratt in the old days. John Corabi and Jizzy Pearl have been around a long time, but never hit it really big like they should have. The band played well, but it wasn't the kind of show that a former headliner should do. The original Ratt shows were disappointing to me. Unlike Stephen Pearcy, Jizzy Pearl appeared to respect the audience. There was no magic even though the old songs were cool to hear played correctly. Maybe the fact that Warren DeMartini did not look like a heavy metal rocker and had no stage moves contributed to my disappointment. He was the reason that I liked the band the first time around. I would have even been happy to see him touring as himself, but the whole Ratt thing was really Ratt. Nothing has changed in 20 years. I go see Ratt; I complain about the show.

Cinderella had its original line-up. They played every bit as good as they did in the old days. Time has been kind to them-- No one appears too old to rock and roll. They played and looked like headliners.

Yeah, you mention Firehouse. You know, I really dig some of their stuff. I understand that they just did a gig with Y&T in Utah this weekend.

I didn't take any offense from Greg's comments as much as I was confused by it. I don't know any other name to call them other than "Vixen". I'm not saying he'd crap on it but I know some guys would say the same thing if we opened for Thin Lizzy. I've heard the same comments since Big Bird died and my response is a similar "bullsh*t". I chose to enjoy whatever 80's rock the music biz can serve up, or jazz, or blues. It's all good, and I've decided to leave my ego out of my music (see on our website).

i saw boc last year and they had a new bass player and drummer. buck, allan lanier, and eric bloom were the only original members. i think one of the bouchard bros (drummer or bassist) is actually deceased. anyway, it's still boc as long as buck is there.

Congrats Abaco!

I checked out all of the websites with the new and old Vixen and my tongue is still hard!

But the vid Greg supplied is a tongue hardener also! If I saw the "Librarian" I would have had my fantasies also...Good eye man!!
