Buster Posted March 11, 2005 Author Posted March 11, 2005 You and I must think alike...as I had the same thought while I was playing it...although, I think the Spruce top adds a bit of tonal character that you would miss with the maple cap...but...I can only dream right now...I just love the looks and playability of it...

JES1680 Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 I debated bringing the III, but the newport is "newer" and one of my current faves. The III will make an appearance at the next 4321 club. I'll have to check dates for the Midwest jam, but sounds fun.

Frisco Kid Posted March 13, 2005 Posted March 13, 2005 Odd...I've only seen humbucker Monacos going for the $1300 range. I admire the abolsute craftmanship and quliaty componenets on my maple top M3, however , I feel the Duncan P90's may not be the best match. I recently had chance at 3 Lollars to switch and I'm regeretting not taking the plunge, still may in the future.Any others happy with their Duncans?
Monacosis Posted March 13, 2005 Posted March 13, 2005 Frisco,Do the Lollars! I put a set in last weekend and it is a big change for the better. Lots more clarity and "air". The change is not that big of a job; you do not have to fish out the vol/tone pots for the standard wiring scheme (but I remember yours is wired differently). All I had to deal with was connections at the switch.I have always thought the M3 deserved a better pick-up and it took me awhile to decide to go with the Lollars. There are lots of good alternatives to the SDs out there, I don't think you can go wrong with Lollars or HDs. (BTW Lollars are cheaper and offer quick delivery, plus Jason is helpful with any questions.)Anyone want a set of SDs? seriously.mike
JES1680 Posted March 13, 2005 Posted March 13, 2005 I've been very happy with my SD's in the M3. I use it more for Rock and blues and so far it's done well. I have a set of Lollars on the way for my Artist Korina and , they may change my mind, but I do like the hot p90's so far.

Were you still able to get the Leslie West, Johnny Thunders kerrang while still retaining that sweet jazzy clean tone? I play mostly blues and classic rock with aspirations for rockabilly/jazz. BTW, that special wiring almost means a pro install as I am a klutz when it comes to wiring! thanks for the advice...
Monacosis Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 Frisco, My impression of the Lollars is that they do everything the SDs do but with added definition/clarity. I have not played a full volume gig with them, so I can't say for sure that the bridge pickup kerrangs (a tone I deeply love). I can say that switching pickups, together with the tone control, offers more diversity with the Lollars than with the SDs, if that makes any sense to you. (Talking about tones is hard for me. ) BTW, I am thinking about drilling another hole for a volume control so I can replace the 5-way with a toggle and still get lots of pickup variations. I need to screw up my courage a lot more before I take a Black and Decker to my M3, though. mike
belgian Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 Are the SD P-90's a standard version or are they especially designed for the Monaco III ? Everybody seems to dislike them. Should Hamer or SD adopt them to standards Lollars seems to have set ?Any toughts ?I have a Monaco III in order and I am getting a little worried, altough I am confident on Hamer quality.
