What are your favorite pickups in a Hamer Artist

Do you like to keep it stock with the Set Lovers, or have you found something you like better. And why??

My Artist Studio ( wratptail ) has TV Jones Classics, and my Artist Custom ( with Bigsby ) hash the Seths

Thinking of pulling the Seths and going with another set of TV Jones, was wondering if anyone else has pulled their

Seths in favor of another pup

The TV Jones seem to have a lot more sparkle to them than the Seths, the Seths seem a little dull in comparison.

I love the Seths, with a bit of a twist. The Artist Custom I got long ago came with Seth Lovers, but also has push-pulls on the 2 volume knobs. So each Pup can be split. IMO, the HB sound is on a par with anything else I have heard/played (for MY uses). Using combinations of the Pup options can give an "acoustic" edge almost on a par with another custom made guitar with the piezo option.

I do not know if it came this way from the factory ('96 model) or was modded later. I do know that Seths are available with 4 conductors, but have to be special ordered......I do not know anyone that STOCKS them.

If I was more of a loud player or did more hard rock than "bluesy", I might want hotter Pups. I know the Monaco Elite (Custom/Custom Custom) has a lot more bite. I have not done a lot of Pup swapping, but I know what my ears like.

the TV Jones pups will have a ceramic magnet,

en result a "sparkle", snap to them,

Kinda like the Old DiMarzio Super D's.

I really like the TVJ classic plus's

Seth's... well, they are designed to be "old school" PAF.

And I really like Seth's, but I try to source a "hotter" wind

to them, and pot the crap out of them, I use a lot of gain.

The bigsby will have an altered tone added to a guitar,

So to compensate, your on the right perception of a

possible bump in the resistance and a snappier magnet.

I like the Suhr SSV neck and SSV+ bridge I put in mine, but I just like Suhr pickups. If mine had come my way with the Seth Lover bridge, I might have left that in; that pickup can get very pleasently rude wth some gain

The unpotted Seth's I had in mine were amazing pickups for low/medium gain stuff.....I had them potted to stop the squeal at high volumes and didn't like them as much! Currently have a '59 set in there which does the trick very nicely :)

If you like the PAF sound, i found i liked the Lollar Imperials better than the Seths. Lightly potted.

The underwounds seemed more articulate, the overwounds gave more beef, so it's a matter of what you want more of.

Sounds good, but.....

Per the TV Jones website,

" the soul of this pickup is in the magnets we use: We analyzed 1/4" thick late 1950's alnico magnets and reproduced them especially for use in our TV Classic. "

My Artist Korina HB came with SD 59s. They were too bright so o put in a set of Vintage Vibe PAF replicas but was ne'er. Quite happy with the bridge pup...I tried an 80s Bill Lawrence L500 that rocked and then an early 80s Dimarzio/Hamer that sounded good but.....I had Pete Biltoft at Vintage Vibe wind me a special set....a humbucker sized HS90a for the neck that has Alnico rod mags so it is a cross between a Strat neck pup on steroids and a p90. For the neck he wound a low wind HB sized p90. I love them. Twang, crunch, and classic blues/rnr tones galore. I love it! My Artist has been my number 1 since I bought it and this makes it even more so....did I mention the middle position has mega Tele chime? A sweet sweet sound plus the pups look rockin cool in my Artist.

One of the great things about that guitar is that it isn't finicky about pickups... you can try pretty much anything under the sun and get useful tones.

Good luck!

I have a SD 59/Rio BBQ combo in mine and love it.

I have Duncan 59s in my 25th Anniversary Mahogany.

I have them wired to a Duncan Triple Shot mounting rings. This guitar sounds friggin' great.

My maple capped Artist has a 59 at the neck & a Duncan custom 5 at the bridge. These are also wired to Triple shots. Not real sure about the Custom 5 yet. A little more gain than I usually like but when I split it to single coil it's one of the best tones I've ever heard.

Some pics. The pic of the Maple top is before the Triple shots.
