Kings X "Ogre Tones"

Buy it.

Great sounding album, some of the best Pinnick Vocals in a while. In fact, lots of great harmony's and vocals all around. Kindof in the Dogman/TapeHead/Ear Candy vein, albeit maybe a bit "mellower" overall, but still very good. The more I listen to it, the more I like it.

It's getting lots of raves on the Gear Page. I hear there's a remake of "Goldilox" on there, which is my all-time favorite King's X tune. How is it, and how does it compare to the original?

I was just on their website seeing what was new w/ them . I'll need to buy it. They're one of my favs.

Goldilox sounds good. It's tuned a bit lower and the production is a lot better than the original.

It's interesting that the band is getting right to the point with these songs - not a lot of solos or other screwing around. A lot of 3 minute tunes. Great vocals by Doug and Ty.

I'll admit that I'm a major fanboy of this band but I've never understood why this style of music wasn't more popular. You think there would be more of a market for very well played hard rock with actual singing and harmonies. Maybe they are just too soft for metal heads and too prog for pop fans.

I don't understand it either. All I know is I killed a lot of brian cells and eardrum tissue and skipped a lot of college classes listening to "Planet" and "Gretchen."

I like melodic rock and prog and I'm not into these guys.

Too intonated for you?

Same here, but I'm selfish. If they were bigger I couldnt have seen them a year ago (maybe 2, for Black Like Sunday) in a tiny l club playing with Fishbone. Heh. Are they on the road supporting this release yet?

For them, it's really too bad they dont have the popular success that most of the bands that ripped off Ty's sound have had.

How do they get any mellower? I don't think they have put out anything good since Dogman. Great band live though. I opened for them on the Dogman tour and Ear Candy tour and they were geat.

Are you kidding? Dogman, Tapehead and Bulbous are pretty hard rocking albums. There was plenty of room to get more mellow. The new one is definitely more subdued and midtempo in places.

Everyone's opinions differ, but I love some of the more recent stuff. Tapehead is a great hard rock album. I'll take it over Out of The Silent Planet any day.

I just ordered "Ogre Tones" on Amazon, so I guess I'll be able to contribute to this thread next week some time.

On a related note, I've been getting some really cool Tabor-esque tones on my MicroCube lately, using the Recto setting with gain pulled back a touch and using what I guess the "4" switch position on my Robin (tele bridge and middle strat pickup together).

I wasn't saying that Dogman wasn't heavy, I thought that was plain to see. In fact I said that they haven't put anything out, IMO, that is as good as Dogman since. Tapehead and Bulbous do not come anywhere near the heaviness of Dogman. Dogman was a combo of heavy (Pillow) and beautiful (Flies and Blue Skies) that they have not achieved since.

Interesting thing is it's primarily short songs w/ short titles. Working on setting up an interview w/ Dug Pinnick next week (and that's not a mis-print; he's dropped the 'o' from his given name). Ditto on his vocals sounding pretty soulful (although I like the recent live CD as well).

Anybody got any ideas about what "Bam" (the last track) is supposed to be about???

I've always thought King's X was utterly unique among trios---particularly when it comes to the tone mix. Tabor's (processed?) stuff is nice n' thick, and Pinnick's (sometimes double-string) bass fattens it up even more.

Yes indeed, sir. Dug and Ty have signature tones that are pleasing, different and work great in the context of a full band sound. And all three know how to step on the gas or ride the brakes, whether it's vocals or instruments, in the context of songwriting.

actually it's sometimes triple string.

I was aware of Pinnick's use of a Hamer 12-string bass, but just wanted to stay a bit safe. I intend to ask him about such if the interview goes off. Thanks for fine-tuning.

I stopped listening after the self-titled album (nothing against the band; around that time my own band was getting off the ground and I was consumed with that and listening to other local music almost exclusively). But I hear nothing but raves about "Dogman" and the Recto tones on there. I'm gonna have to seek that one out. I'll probably get "Ogre Tones" too if only for the "Goldilox" remake.

When my band opened a show on the Dogman tour Ty was using all Yamaha (Soldano) heads. Not sure if he used them on the reord or not.

I think he used Mesa on Dogman. Then he used Line6 POD/Pro with Mesa power amps, at least live. Now supposedly he's switch to Randalls modular system.
