lincsman Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Both very good ,I wish I could olay like themI thing Marty has the edge, but it is a close one
Hellraiser6502 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 WOW!!! Total ironic moment here.....*TODAY* I happened to be sitting next to Chris's brother at my favorite restaurant counter (Manuel's/El Tepeyac in East LA). Had some good conversation and food. Cool guy that looks a LOT like his brother.I voted for Friedman though...as i believe Marty was the BEST guitarist MD ever had.LOVE Chris Poland who is a CLOSE second!!
carfish7 Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Marty = computerized wankery to my ears. Dude is fast as hell, knows lots of scales that are "outside", and seems to be well-educated in the Shred realm. Is he another one of those "GIT" types that actually went to school to learn music? Didn't dig his tone too much either. Where's the beef?!? Just not "feeling" him at all but respect his ability to melt faces that are tuned to his frequency....Chris = tasteful chops and a tone that is far more pleasing to my ears, although I will add that someone once laid a copy of "Return To Metalopolis" on me years ago and I could not listen to it because the production made it feel like someone way kicking me in the cerebral cortex (and not in a good way). Clicky and plastic sounding. Yuck. Those Yamaha SG/SBG's sound FAT!This uninformed opinion was based on the examples given here and have ZERO to do with the Megadeth part of their bodies of work. Never listened to them really, except for the "hits" as they were presented on radio. Both players are humbling to be sure. I think Chris Poland is more inspiring for me personally. I need to go practice now..........
diablo175 Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Friedman has more concise phrasing and is able to seamlessly blend numerous styles and modes into a composition without it sounding cluttered or overwrought. F*ck it, I just like his stuff with Megadeth better. 'Nuff said.
zorrow Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 To be fair, the examples shown here give Poland as a clear winner. What a tone and what a great fusion player! Also loved those multi-note bends. Got me working on them right away. But in Megadeth Marty is still THE one for me.

I need to go practice now..........All of those Shrapnel albums had horrible rhythm tones and ridiculous sounding drums and whatnot. They just sound sort of awful compared to what can be done today with more modern production standards. Mike Varney could scout the best and fastest, but he sure produced horrible sounding albums, that's for sure. Some of the Marty Friedman rhythms on Dragon's Kiss seem grainy to the point of being almost indistinct... kind of a hallmark of the Shrapnel rhythm sound though.I don't think I got what Poland is doing on the guitar, the Jan Hammer and Chick Corea thing is now allowing my brain to latch on to what he is doing. He also does McLaughlin stuff, that I didn't notice before... must be a Mahavishnu fan.Chris Broderick can play both.

From what I know, Marty is almost completely self-taught. He certainly looks like it if you see him play Also, I think if you listen to what he plays, he isn't really a cookie-cutter shred guy at all. For that matter, lots of the Shrapnel guys, though they got lumped together, are pretty individualistic players (I'm sure the production style had something to do with it). - Austin
FrettyMcgee Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 They both hold the pick weird, and they're both better than Kirk Hammett.
atquinn Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 They both hold the pick weird, and they're both better than Kirk Hammett. That last part isn't much of a distinguishing characteristic. IMO. - Austin
