Disturber Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Only problem is my Swedish brethren seems to be playing at bedroom levels. So the test ain't of much use, as speakers tend to sound very differently when cranked to gig levels. Don't get it why so many Youtube testers are playing so low. Test the gear at usable levels. Even if it's not making you deaf it should at least be at levels that can compete with a live drummer. Amps, effects and speaker do sound different (and if they are sincerely manufactured, were designed for) gig levels.
murkat Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Yup. My ears hear as they always have heard. V30 sucks 12-65 is King To my ears... But of course, a couple of fine other mentions as well, but.... ^
bubs_42 Posted December 26, 2013 Author Posted December 26, 2013 The day I quite using the V30 could not have come fast enough. When he went to the 12-65 all I could hear was Jimmy Page.
Disturber Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Listened through the whole clip. It's cool what he's done. But for instance the G12-65 and the G12M-70 does not sound as sweet as that when pushed hard. Both these speakers have a pretty strong 80s metal flavour. They are kinda on the bright side and have a pretty tight respons. I use open backs so I like the G12H-30s the best. I have four 70s ones. Both with the pulsonics and earlier cones, 55 and 75 hz versions. These are my favourite Celestions. For newer production Celstions it's hard to beat the 70 Anniversaries.Even the G12-75s sounds okay in this clip. In real life I always thought they sounded like crap.I am very curious on the older 444 coned G12-80s. I will try one of these in my 4010 JCM800 combo soon. That will be interesting. I think I will like them way better than the 65s and the 70s.Cudos to the guy for taking his time to do this though. I had fun watching it.
Hamer_SS_guy Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Well, I have been happy with the G12-75 for quite some time. I love the Celestion 200W Gold speaker (similar to the EVM-12) that is in the Marshall 30th Anniversary combo, but I think it was especially made for that amp. Celestion had another speaker that was called "Sidewinder" (rated 150W) which has been used in Marshall amps in the 80's/90's which I like.

My bogner Uber cab is loaded with V30's and 75's in an X pattern, and sounds killer with the uberschall, all other speakers, cabs, pale in comparison.
bubs_42 Posted December 27, 2013 Author Posted December 27, 2013 Uber Cab is a great sounding cab. I did not know what it was loaded with when I played through one.
MCChris Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 And there you have it. V30s and 75s balance each other out perfectly in the midrange. When running a cab loaded only with either of those speakers, best to use a scooped mid amp (6L6s, Fender, Mesa) with the V30s and a mid-heavy amp (EL34s, Marshall) with the 75s. Doing the opposite yields too little or too much mids, and thus sounds crappy. And yes, both sound better when pushed.
Bobby Marshall Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 One time I used two 4x12 cabs together, one loaded with vintage 30 and the other loaded with evm-12l. Life was good that night.
svl Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 One of my fave IRs is the Uber 75/V30 mix. Just stellar.
Brooks Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 my problem w/ X pattern mixed speaker cabs is that 99% of the time there's one mic on one speaker, so what you hear standing infront of it is misleading.and GTFO w/ that "mic both speakers and mix it down as it sounds in the room" stuff.but if you are mixing speakers in a 4x12 for your own amusement and bedroom wanking...GTFOEDIT - i have been drinking.
Disturber Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I used to mix a G12-65 with a 70 Anniversary. Great combo.
tonefiend Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I had v-30s loaded in two Mesa 2x12 oversized cabs, and they sounded a bit sterile through any head I used, especially my hot-rodded Bogner Goldfinger 45. So, I decided to change them out for something with sweeter tones.I put two 15watt Alnico Blues in one of the cabs and made a new back piece so it is now an 3/4 open back cabinet. I really like the Alnico Blues sparkly tone and the open back cab seems to spread out the sound. The other cabinet, I replaced the v-30s with a 25watt greenback and a 30watt G12H-30 and left it a closed back for more thump. I like the open and closed back setup as it seems to get best of both worlds. And for my Bogner Goldfinger 45, the low watt speaker combo seems to work well.
