Any Eyeglass Experts here?

Question

A few years back I found the perfect eyeglasses. I have a fat head, so that ain't easy to do. Of course now that I need to update my prescription, I find out they have since been discontinued.

HELP!!

These have been through hell and still fit (and look) good. Best I've ever had. I WANT ANOTHER PAIR!!!!!

Anybody know where I could maybe find NOS frames? The local guy will make the lenses, so I'm good there. He'll even put them in these old frames, but I was really hoping to find new ones, because now that I know these aren't made any more, I'll break them sure as sh!t.

A beer and undying gratitude to the man (or woman) who can help.

(They are Nautica N7301 frames)

Thank youThank youThank youThank youThank youThank youThank you Infinity.

I recently found a nice set of discontinued Armani frames on ebay, they were perfect NOS and I had no issues

having them fitted with lenses...

If you can look at your glasses, you'll see a set of numbers, something like 50/18/140 or

something like that. that will help a lot

eBay has been a source for frames, but there is a lot of cheap Chinese stuff on there.

So, what is the big issue? Do you need longer temples or a wider frame?

The biggest issue is they quit making this particular model. And when I fall into a rut, I like to stay there.

I can get new lenses for the ones on my head right now, but a backup pair would be nice.

I recently went through new glasses shopping and finding mine were discontinued, and that I really didn't like anything current, especially with my heavy prescription (-10.5). But at the same time I found that my eyes had stabilized enough for Lasik, so I had that done.

I also had glasses in a similar style, but full rimmed. They seem to have fallen out of style.

Anyway, Nautica is one of the Marchon brands, so you may want to see if there's a similar style under another name or check some smaller retailers that may have had them on the shelf for a bit. I know I checked a Union Eyecare and when I looked up what they had nearly everything was discontinued, so you may want to call around some smaller shops/chins.

Anyway, this site has information about the discontinued frames: http://www.glasses2go.com/Glasses/Nautica_N_7301_010_Black-9238.aspx . I put those numbers into another website. These look similar:

http://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Calvin_Klein-pakikhs/r.html

http://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Shuron-temikb/r.html

http://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Titmus-lalala/r.html

http://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Safilo_Team-tdmath/r.html

Not what you were looking for but maybe there's something helpful there.

And if you're wondering I recommend Lasik. After four decades of not being able to see anything without glasses it's a pretty dramatic change.

You're welcome.

But really, think about breaking out of the rut. Two years ago I finally abandoned the eyeglass styles I'd used for the previous 15+ years and turned out to be a very positive change.

Yeah JB - that was one of the first ones I found too, but the 'sold out'/'out of stock' put me off a little. I'll try calling them later and see what's up.

I asked about Lasik. Doc said I'm too old. Bastard.

Sorry, I missed their "out of stock" sign, which was more prominently displayed in the other listings I found.

My optometrist said that once someone reaches 40 or so, there will be a need for reading glasses. Lasik will only help a little.

Charlie Daniels had Lasik surgery done in his 70's and felt it was the greatest thing in the world. He still wore reading glasses when signing autographs last year.

I'm 47. Although I can't really believe that and went my life with very thick glasses. In High School they were absurd. I considered Lasik before but either my eyes had not stabilized enough or I couldn't really afford it. But when I found out my most recent prescription called for -10.5 correction, an astigmatism and either bifocals or progressive lenses--and would be quite expensive--but my vision had stabilized over the last few years (other than the close up reading) I decided to look into Lasik.

So far it's gone well. I'm still adjusting, but I selected "Monovision." With that they fully correct your dominant eye but leave the other a little nearsighted, so you're able to focus well from near to far.

Edit - Anyway, Hamerhead - Did you take a look at the Calvin Kleins I posted above? I believe Murchon makes both brands, and it looks like they're available and may be able to find in a shop.

I was told last year the "Randy Jackson" (yes, that Randy Jackson: former Journey bassist, and American Idol judge turned advisor) glasses collection (WalMart, where else is a redneck going to shop for glasses?) were for larger heads. Might give that a whirl to see if any of his styles work for you.

As to the problems with aging and lens stiffening (aka, arms becoming too short), I've been checking out a new app on iPhone called GlassesOff. It puts the user through a series of exercises to ostensibly retrain the brain to deal with the difference in the eye's capabilities. I've only been doing it a few days, so I can't report any results, but it holds promise.

I had Lasik when I was 31 years old, when I hit 40, just like the doctor said, I needed reading glasses. But the Lasik is still a blessing and I have 20/20 vision in both eyes (I'm 44 now).

Randy Jackson is also selling his own line of guitars on Home Shopping Network-I saw the name in the listings and the first thing that came to mind was the guy from Zebra-so I quickly changed to the HSN expecting to see pointy guitars and stuff. What a letdown.

Lasik all the way!

Was about $3300.00 CAD about 5 years ago. So I is a little speedy. (But it got me a nice medical write off at tax time)

So I woulda been 44. I did need reading glasses when I sat up after the procedure. But a pair of cheapo 'readers' fixed that.

Best thing I ever did.
