veatch Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I'm horrible at this...Korina - warm similar to hawg, but a little sweeter.Spruce - woodier, softer attackMaple - depends on plain, flame, quilt, etc - brighter, more attack. And I'm likely completely wrong. Overall, blue guitars sound the best. Of this I am certain.
django49 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Blue, yes! [ /URL] Okay, let me try to be more helpful. I pretty much agree with the above description. Cedar seems similar to spruce(?) Redwood is usually a bit harder to find in a hollow guitar as it is a softer wood, which Hamer found trickier to work with in their limited edition of SOLID body guitars (I was told). But keep in mind that these are generalities and only PART of the equation. There is also (can be) a big difference in other respects.....Is the body mahogany or otherwise? Is the neck maple, hog, korina, rosewood, ziracote, cocobola, ebony? Is there a difference between BRW and other rosewood (I contend there is....Or can be). And some finishes enhance/diminish tone (as well as feel). The one pictured is a longer scale, with "traditional" materials except for an ebony board. It is my go to. But a chambered (similar) guitar with redwood top and BRW neck/board is SO much sweeter with a more "hi fi" sound. And one with a BRW TOP is also.....Well, different! (Test driving guitars with different materials, esp some with "exotic wood" necks, is great fun!) And lets not get into pickups. But, yes, those are good places to START!
ptm1diver Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 The Deaf Man I posed your question to said there is no difference in sound.
Studio Custom Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 The harder the wood, the less it resonates and the brighter it sounds.
Caddie Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 Thanks for your opinions guys. I love the sound of my Spruce top guitars (Newport, Duotone, vs Maple top Artist for comparison purposes.) So I think I'll go back to my fall back criteria....does it look cool. Pure fashion and vanity. When you boil it down isn't that why we all became guitar players? To get the chicks, right? Although it never really worked out like that for me.Cheers!caddie

Sugartune Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Wait a minute...I thought there was no difference in sound between "tone" woods. Are people still trying to say that? All I know about it, is my Newport was very sweet. Much different sound and feel than anything else. The same can be said of Korina. ..etc.
django49 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 ^^^^ No, you are thinking about "tone deaf" woods.
