Victor (Fret Friend) Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 You need Adblock PLUS! It's a free browser add-on. Been using it months and I get no ads anywhere ever! Blocks 'em all and it's FREE! Google it
DaveL Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 Thanks Vic! going to try that when I get home.
Steve Haynie Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I contacted the editorial department and sales department of a news site that has a bunch of video ads that randomly play. They have been getting past my pop up blocker and make it hard to watch a news video when the ad starts playing without warning. I was told that the site does not allow those types of ads, and one of the companies buying ad space was breaking the rules. Whoever came up with the idea of pop up video ads embedded in a page ought to be caned in Singapore daily until those ads disappear across the entire Internet.

stratacus Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I use Flashblock. It replaces flash objects with a button that you can click to activate them if you choose to do so.
DaveL Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Thanks everyone, downloaded adblock plus... got a couple things still showing, so I ran malwarebytes and it picked up afew offending files and zapped em. interesting how it picked up some stuff that Norton didn't get. better now.
aknapp Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Norton sucks!Just my opinion+1Avast or Kaspersky over pretty much anything else, though I might be a little out of date. Anything better that either of these two?
scottcald Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 It sounds to me like your Adobe Flash update actually took you somewhere other than Adobe and that installed the adware. If you go to a site, then that sort of thing pops up, ignore it. Go to adobe.com and check what Flash Player you're on and download the latest only directly from them. Always go directly to the software maker for their updates, especially for Flash. You need something to get rid of the adware, not just block it. Microsoft has some malware remediation tools and also look at malwarebytes.org Oh, and don't download stuff from Cnet or download.com, they're now known to have things that install adware. Hope that's helpful.

I also removed flash and then re-installed, and it's all good.
alantig Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 FYI - Amazon is running a deal on a lifetime license for Malwarebytes. $19.99.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T1GXL0K/ref=as_sl_pd_tf_lc

jamminpete Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Download Privoxy and set up your browser to go through the proxy. It blocks ads really well . I use it all the time. Especially on ebay.http://www.privoxy.org/user-manual/quickstart.html
scottcald Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Additionally, I use ghostery on Safari and Firefox on the Mac. I generally set it to block everything and then whitelist sites that I actually like.
