SSII x 2 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I dug my Cali out of storage Wednesday after not playing itfor a couple years. I always remembered the fretboard beingvery light colored, and sure enough it seemed really light forwhat I assumed was a rosewood board. Anyway, I treated itwith lemon oil and figured it would appear darker, but that wasnot the case. Did Hamer ever make Calis with anything but arosewood or ebony board? The grain on my guitar sure lookslike rosewood, but it's almost the color of mahogany. Anyoneelse seen a very light rosewood board, or am I dealing withanother species?
Hbom Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I think they made at least 2 with maple boards. Check with Nathan he has/had one.
cmatthes Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 It could have been light rosewood - doubtful that it would have been Pao Ferro, but who knows. Hamer's rosewood was typically pretty dark, but for some reason in the mid-late '90s there was a lot of light stuff being put out. What year is your Cali? Pics definitely help!
SSII x 2 Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 I'm kind of tech challenged, but I'll try and get some picks up.It's def. not maple. I'm pretty sure it's a 1988, and it's a prettystandard model, e.g. dot inlay, bolt-on, white body, yellowed with age...
Jem Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I've seen some fairly light rosewood boards and as Chris said, I don't think they ever used Pao Ferro which tends to be a little lighter.
DBraz Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 All of my Rosewood fretboard Hamer's have quite different degrees of darkness. The lightest I have owned being an '86 Chap. Darkest and most even an '86 Hamer Miller. Go figure?
mc2 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I've seen some fairly light rosewood boards and as Chris said, I don't think they ever used Pao Ferro which tends to be a little lighter.I had a mid-90s Hamer Bass with a Pao Ferro fingerboard.
tobereeno Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 my '88 Cali neck has by far the lightest shade of brown rosewood out of all of my guitars. Yeah, I'd say it's almost like mahogany.
