Cali fretboard ?

SSII x 2

Question

Posted

I dug my Cali out of storage Wednesday after not playing it

for a couple years. I always remembered the fretboard being

very light colored, and sure enough it seemed really light for

what I assumed was a rosewood board. Anyway, I treated it

with lemon oil and figured it would appear darker, but that was

not the case. Did Hamer ever make Calis with anything but a

rosewood or ebony board? The grain on my guitar sure looks

like rosewood, but it's almost the color of mahogany. Anyone

else seen a very light rosewood board, or am I dealing with

another species?

I think they made at least 2 with maple boards. Check with Nathan he has/had one.

It could have been light rosewood - doubtful that it would have been Pao Ferro, but who knows. Hamer's rosewood was typically pretty dark, but for some reason in the mid-late '90s there was a lot of light stuff being put out. What year is your Cali?

Pics definitely help!

I'm kind of tech challenged, but I'll try and get some picks up.

It's def. not maple. I'm pretty sure it's a 1988, and it's a pretty

standard model, e.g. dot inlay, bolt-on, white body, yellowed with age...

I've seen some fairly light rosewood boards and as Chris said, I don't think they ever used Pao Ferro which tends to be a little lighter.

All of my Rosewood fretboard Hamer's have quite different degrees of darkness.

The lightest I have owned being an '86 Chap. Darkest and most even an '86 Hamer Miller. Go figure?

I had a mid-90s Hamer Bass with a Pao Ferro fingerboard.

my '88 Cali neck has by far the lightest shade of brown rosewood out of all of my guitars. Yeah, I'd say it's almost like mahogany.

Interesting that both our Calis are 1988s. Must be they got a

stock of light colored rosewood around then...
