Studio Custom Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 The problem is that nobody was buying the Hamer stuff at the end, which is a big reason why they closed the doors. They would have to come in at about half where they were pricing things - and that would probably equal a parallel drop in quality, or even worse, import-only options.Let's be honest with ourselves here - how many of you would REALLY drop $4,500 for a Californian?People do it for Suhrs everyday. The problem is the imports distorted the brand recognition.

When I would have dropped that kind of coin for a new shreddy Hamer I was flat out told no..on two different models (Cali and Watson). By the time they offered it again, I wasn't single with money burning a hole in my pocket. I sure can't / won't drop $4K on a guitar now!

I'm in the exact same boat...and it sailed a few years before they opened the Custom Order gates to do the identical order I had placed nearly every year for a decade (actually, 12 years) and they had declined. By the time they finally agreed to do it, the price had nearly tripled, and my money was going to things like college tuition, etc.
anotherfreak Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 why bash washburn?iv'e played some excelent guitars out of there. i still have a P4 or a Idol on my "someday" list. i thought washburn took in some Hamer folks when Hamer moved to NH.
Disturber Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 why bash washburn?Because I just now looked at their homepage. Have you seen the electric guitar models they are making?Eight out of ten models are bloody awful looking. Two, the semi acoustic ones are decent. The rest look like Chinese imports (perhaps they are?)http://www.washburn.com/products/electric/

And to comment on the topic...I'm interested to see what happens, but I'm not anywhere near as interested in acquiring anything that may come out of it. Like many others have said, it'd be a Shishkov many times over before a new Hamer. It doesn't make much sense from a commercial standpoint. You'd think they'd do some research to get a feeling for demand with some of the fans of the past, you know like everyone here. I'm not against a "re-birth" in principle. I'd just reserve judgement until there's something to actually judge.
peedenmark7 Posted April 27, 2015 Author Posted April 27, 2015 Hamer USA has been replaced by Shishkov Custom Guitars USA for me.I wish him all the luck in the world, but he is in his infancy. At the moment he has some HFC momentum, but when that subsides he has to find new customers, which will have a cost associated with it. We all know he did fantastic work as an employee, being a proprietor requires additional skills, only time will tell if he has those too.I was thinking that very thing this afternoon. For example, back in the 80's when i was really gigging, I was buying a new Hamer or Jackson about every 4-6 months. With an average Hamer costing anywhere from $550 off the wall to $1k+ my in store cost for the custom stuff being made , that was a tidy sum for a kid 16-25 years old. I just can't see dropping the money equivalent today on a new custom order guitar from any maker that often, and not just because there are other priorities. It's the multiple guitar buyers that really make or break you.Anyway, I truly hope he does well.. Good guy, outstanding luthier. Those Ultimate's are killer looking !
cynic Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Speculation on what may or may not come from the Hamer brand is one thing, but how about we do away with any speculation surrounding Mike or Shishkov Guitars. I suggest we assume he's got a plan he feels he will work, and we either support him with our orders or we STFU.
