Friedman Brown Eye 100 (BE100) Thoughts?

Anyone here tried one of these out? Read a little and heard some clips and they seem like THE plexi-flavored amp to have. Thinking about getting one and I would appreciate any thoughts you may have.

Thanks! :)

I played one for a while at G/C in Dallas. A couple of thoughts

1. I immediately wanted one.

2. It's not a Plexi inspired amp, more a hot-rodded JCM800 / doesn't really do the plexi crunch low gain thing that well, it's more compressed and modern sounding.

3. Nails the EVH tone

4. HBE channel was more gain than I would probably use

5. Decent clean channel (this was an earlier two input version with the simple clean)

Overall I wanted one bad. Still on the radar but they are really spendy. The one I tried was through a Friedman 4x12 with greenbacks and V30s and that also may be part of the sound. Overall I think they are the best hot-rodded Marshall on the market. Someday If I find a good deal on one I might pick one up.

Brown Eye? Reminds me of this NSFW routine by The Beat Farmers:

Buddy of mine spent some quality time with one and came u[p with pretty much with the same impressions as JES1680. especially the immediate want part.

Never played one, but definitely a huge fan of the HBE model in my Axe FX2. And yes, it's definitely a more modern sound. For Plexi stuff, I use the Plexi 50 and 100 models, which definitely have a different flavor (the Cameron CCV-100 seems to be a closer match for the Plexi thing (in some of it's settings).

Do you need 100 watts?

It's not about need it's about WANT. Great master volume on these. Similar to the Soldano SLO they are designed to be run with the master, not necessarily wide open for the best sound. Part of what is so great about them is that they sound stellar at low - mid volumes, you don't have to kill every living thing within 25 yards for them to sound good. :)

My 74 1987 half stack on the other hand sounds great but sterilizes all of the male species that walk in it's path. :)

Thanks for all the feedback! I had a line on one at a "reasonably" better-than-new-price.

Obviously I had the wrong impression of the amp thinking it was a plexi-flavored amp. A more open - less compressed sound is more my thing.

Was able to listen to additional clips and read some more and it appears the Bogner Helios may be more in-line with what I'm going for. My Bogner Goldfinger is close but just isn't hot enough for my needs.

Since you're located a short drive away from Scott Splawn's shop, have you considered something like a Street Rod?

Very impressed with Tone Kings Royalist . It has a great early plexi meets bluesbreaker sound . 45 very loud watts . You can also get it in a 1x12 combo . The built in attenuator is excellent .

As am I. Initially thought I'd made a mistake with this one, but then I messed around with the screen voltage and bias adjustment. WOW.

Thought it would be used for more bluesy stuff to some classic rock, but hit it with a clean boost and I've been playing a lot of old Priest through it lately. Still in the honeymoon stage, but my 74 JMP is not getting any play time.
