Ting Ho Dung Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I've watched the '70s videos around the MIJ album and performances. Then Gillian left the band and I wasn't much interested in Coverdale. Blackmore also wanted to change the band's direction. But, along came this tidbit I hadn't seen. It amazed me, except for the drum solo. The first song is a bit boring but then Blackmore explodes. The camera angle is perfect to watch him do his majick. I was originally interested because Gillian was back and I had forgotten about their hit, "Thrill of the Chase" from this era. Gillian gives a pretty good performance but seems to have lost some of his voice. My focus quickly turned to Blackmore. I really hope you guys can watch the whole video at some point in one sitting.
Jakeboy Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Thanks for this! I was stoked back in 1984 when they released the Perfect Strangers album with the killer MIJ lineup. Blackmore kills and he is adept at making it all seem so effortless.
carfish7 Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Actually it's "Knocking at Your Back Door" that you recall.I LOVE Perfect Strangers - monster album that features RB pummeling a Vox AC30 mercilessly.
Ting Ho Dung Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 Actually it's "Knocking at Your Back Door" that you recall.I LOVE Perfect Strangers - monster album that features RB pummeling a Vox AC30 mercilessly.I don't know what it is but a long time ago I quit memorizing song names. Seems like it was just after High School. I remember back in the day getting a new album and reading all the lyrics along with the songs and going through the artwork. Around that time I also stopped caring about the member's names in the bands. Other than say, Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Neil Young, and other older big names, I lost track with the lineup changes and didn't care about the names in the newer bands. Even bands I really really like. Back to Blackmore, I noticed in this video he is constantly hitting his pickup selector switch. Is this just a way for him to keep time? A nervous tick? Is he doing this for effect? At his volume I really can't hear the effect if there is one.
ZR Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I do the same thing about NOT remembering song names anymore! I blame it on the current music formats...mainly MP3's. I still buy CDs but mainly just put the music on my phone or whatever and listen that way w/o looking at the album cover etc.
Hfan Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 He blew me away around '73. Saw Deep Purple in NYC at The Felt Forum..through a thick haze of reefer smoke. Incredible. Made a big impact on me.
mrhappy Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Yeah Blackmore had/has a unique style and played some GREAT stuff!!! He certainly wouldn't get lost in a crowd of Strats!! Re: Gillian's performance... it was sounding to me like he probably had a bit too much coke before the show, however when he addresses the audience @ 11:17 he says something like ... "Don't stand too close or you might get a cold"... his way of informing us that while this might not be his 'A' game, he's still gonna give us what he's got! ... I WISH I could sound that 'off'!! Haha! Re: the pickup switching thing... He's working' it for SURE!! Haha! Personally, I don't know how ANYONE can play a Strat without CONSTANTLY changing to selector switch UNintentionally, I know I can't... so perhaps it's something he does between deciding where he wants it for the 'next blazing lick' and making sure it goes there! Maybe the switch is starting to get a little funky and he's constantly 'cleaning' the connection!! Haha! ... whatever it is he can surely play!
Brooks Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 i saw this lineup twice; 1st time at reunion areana in dallas the night before i had to take my S.A.T. test for college.then i saw them at the texxas jam at the cotton bowl. i still have the tune "perfect strangers" on my ipod, love it.
Jakeboy Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Regarding the selector switch, I believe he is just using different pickups for different parts of the songs, or different parts of the solos. This is very effective on a Strat, like when he does it on the Smoke On The Water solo, for the last lick he jumps to the bridge for great effect.SRV did this often as well....Joe Perry too....thinking of the Sight For Sore Eyes solo....

I play Strats more than any other guitar I own. Hence why I focus so much on videos of Strat players. At times though he seems to go from the top position to the bottom and back to the top like he's trying to shake out some dirt in the switch. I don't hear any scratching noise though so I was wondering if this is just a nervous tick. Kind of like when he takes his left hand off the neck and shakes it a bit. Gilmour seems to touch his volume knob a lot. Always wondered if that was a way he kept time. Or possibly it's adrenaline. Sometimes when I smoke dope I can't sit through suspenseful parts of a movie and I have to get up out of my seat even if it's for just an instant. I know that the effects of THC but you gotta wonder when you are playing in front of 20k people if you have to move things even if they don't need moving. Gilmour and Trower suck in their cheeks when they play. Maybe since Blackmore stands so perfectly still so much he may have to wiggle his switch just to keep from exploding.
seeker Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 And he's got only two pickups. That makes a whole lot more sense now.
mc2 Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 One of the most flattering compliments I ever received was when Richie Blackmore heard my band was looking for a new guitarist and sent his personal guitar tech over to our band house to audition....and loaned him one of his Strats and the tiny amp he'd recorded Machinehead with....some Pignose-sized black amp with melted purple was all over the top and front. I didn't even know Blackmore knew I existed. Apparently, he'd seen us at a Long Island club near his home and liked us. That was the same club BTW where all of DP met to talk and decide they were going to reunite for Perfect Strangers (Sparks in Huntington, NY.) Not a huge club but a cool place. Billy Joel and other local name guys would stop down on occasion because no one who hassle them (pardon the Joel pun at the time I had a Tascam open reel 8-track in my home studio and Sparks also had one that they recorded the live sets with....the owner used to let me go in during the day to dub copies of my masters when I needed to between the two 8-tracks. It was a great little venue.

Yes, he uses it very often for voicing mostly switching to the neck for high strings and bridge for bass strings. He also does quite a lot of very quick call and response changes; as for the flipping up and down repeatedly, he does that to accentuate his vibrato; watch his fretting hand when he does this and you'll see he is shaking a note for vibrato when he is doing this, even for really short vibrato. Something I'd never thought of doing before, but it's quite interesting. There you go. Thanks for that. Now it makes sense. He is yeenyus.
