landon w Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Wanting to upgrade the tremolo on my Mirage. Any suggestions/instructions.
RobB Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 I replaced the rattle-y, old Wilkie in my Mirage II with a Gotoh trem that was similar to a PRS. Doesn't look like they make it any more, but this one looks like a nice option. Just make sure to measure the baseplate mounting holes in the body before you order.
Bloozguy Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 You should give BCR Greg a call. He's replaced quite a few of those Wilkinsons with better 6-screw units or more functional 2-screw types. If I still had a Mirage that's where I'd send it.
BubbaVO Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 There are plenty of options. BCRGreg replaced the trem in my old black Daytona with a 2 point trem. It worked great. If memory serves these units were used by Hamer for the Vintage S models. I dropped in a Mann made trem in my blue Daytona. It works great too. I'm looking to replace the trem in my red maple top mirage. I'll probably go with the Mann made unit when I get around to it.
cmatthes Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 The Vintage S used an ABM trem that hasn't been made in many years, apparently. The MannMade trems are a great option, and drop right in. If you want a stiffer feel, the SuperVee Bladerunner is an excellent option.Any of these can be done in the comfort of your own home in under a half hour, unless you have to have a 2-point model. Both of the units above come in a vintage (6 screw mount) or modern (2 point) option.

burningyen Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I put one in my Mirage II based on your recommendation. Solid unit with a stiffer trem action than the more spongy stock Wilkie. That's odd. Did you try keeping the Wilkie springs on?

Did you try keeping the Wilkie springs on?Frankly I don't remember, but I doubt i considered that. I do keep my trems tight so they don't pitch forward during double stop bends, though. Floyd Rose, PRS, Fender 2- and 6-point, three varieties of Wilkies....all different feels with similar setups.
SSII x 2 Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I put one of these on a MiM Deluxe Player's Strat:http://guitarheads.net/products/bridges/wilkinsontrem2ptsb.htmlWorks like a charm, albeit the guitar has locking tuners and a graphitenut. I work the trem quite a bit, and zero tuning issues. Very solidunit, and dirt cheap...
