hamerhead Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Asking for a friend again (same one). More details: it's a bare raw never-been-finished-before pine body that's going to be painted a solid color. 1st attempt (read: dumbass).
Steve Haynie Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 My experience with a grain filler on mahogany was that it was no fun. Trying to scrape it away before getting too dry was a mess. Get ready for a learning curve.
Hbom Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 IIRC Pine is usually pretty close grained and shouldn't require any filler. But it needs a sealer to keep the finish even. Double seal the end grain and sand the whole thing to 320. But I am not a painter. So your results may vary.
murkat Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 pm stike about pine and sealing of. Depends on the species of pine, etc.
hamerhead Posted March 22, 2017 Author Posted March 22, 2017 Species? Seriously?!? I thought pine was something you did for a lost love. I'm....I mean MY FRIEND is never gonna get this.

LordsoftheJungle Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I've only used wood filler once and it worked pretty well,,, Timbermate was the brand and they do make a 'hardwood' pine variety (my project was in red oak). I'd try out Hbom's suggestions first though, don't use it if you don't have to, and do as many trial runs on test pieces as needed to get the desired results. https://www.amazon.com/Timbermate-Maple-Beech-Hardwood-Filler/dp/B001NV7GRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490625138&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=timbermate+pine&psc=1&smid=A2XE2MEZYFBJP5
Stike Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Pine needs no pore/grain filler. It can be "thirsty" so you might need more sealer than you think.
