For 1980 what would be the difference between a Sunburst and a Special?  Is it just binding on the sunburst?

Binding and possibly crown inlays.

Yeah, that's pretty much it; body binding, optional neck binding, optional crown inlays.

Yup, basically a stripped down Sunburst and also no maple veneer top either.

Almost ALL Specials had the maple veneer cap.  Even. OST of the opaque finished ones.

They pulled those from stacks of bodies.   The finishes were done based upon the orders, or in extremely rare cases an opaque finish was used if there was a mistake or the one piece veneer wouldn’t look as good with a trans finish.   The veneers were about the thickness of a piece of construction paper.

Right.  So the one body served both models which cut down on production costs.

The 1990's P90 Specials had no maple cap or veneer. But you all know that.

Unless you're this guy with the alleged Sunburst built to Special specs.

IF that guitar is legit, and let's assume that it is, I can just imagine the way the conversation went when it was ordered.

Customer: I'd like to order a new sunburst... Red, dot inlays.
Hamer: Neck binding?
Customer: No. In fact, no binding on the body, either.
Hamer: No binding on the body? With dot inlays and no neck binding, you're ordering a Special.
Customer: No, I want a Sunburst with no binding and dot inlays.
Hamer: Umm... yeah, that's a Special.
Customer: Would a Special have a checkerboard logo?
Hamer: Of course
Customer: Ah ha....
Hamer: ...?...
Customer: Ah ha...

Again, if that guitar is legit, the person who ordered it basically paid extra for a different headstock logo.

That was a 1978

It's still in the HFC family.

I like this:

It's still in the HFC family.

It means it will always be cared for by people who appreciate it more.

Or…and hear me out on this theory…he ordered an inbound Sunburst before Hamer released the Special as a production model.

The Grovers, if original, would support that.

That's a good theory.

I'd have to know the serial number to know if it holds water.

Same here.  Although as mentioned, the Grovers v. Schallers are a clue…
