sonic1974 Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Ok, I know these, how does x compare to y questions are kind of hard to answer, but here's one anyway. How do all mahogany studios sound, compared to regular ones with a maple top? I've had a studio custom before, and it was really cool, would an all mahogany sound a lot different?
G Man Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Not speaking from experience with these two guitars, as a general rule I would expect the all hog to be warmer with a bit less snap, whereas the maple cap will add weight, brightness and some snap. YMMV.
bubs_42 Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 They are the Overlooked Jem's of Hamer Guitars. I personally think the all Hog Studio's are fantastic and the Vangaurd (All Hog) Artist is a Super Guitar as well.
sonic1974 Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 You guys are going to make me get out my wallet! ha ha
sixesandsevens Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I bet it varies a lot though. I've got an "all mahogany" (maple veneered) 80's Sustainblock Special that is WAAAY brighter than my wraptail studio. I think some of it's the old DiMarzio Slammers and some of it's the bridge, but it definitely surprised me.Either way, a mahogany Studio would be great. One went for a pittance recently ($375 + shipping, I think) so you likely can find them for cheaper than the flamey or curly ones.
sonic1974 Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 Yeah, I'm thinking, you're right about the special, I think it would be brighter due to the bridge, pickups make a big difference as well. That's crazy that a Studio went for $375, was that a USA? That must be the deal of the year right there!I'm thinking a mahogany studio. I wanted a p-90 Hamer, but it seems like p-90 Specials generally have thinner necks than I'd like. The other Hamers with P-90s with bigger necks seem to be a bit out of my price range (Korina Junior, BCR Junior) or quite rare (Goldtop with P-90s).So I'm thinking maybe of getting humbucker sized p-90s and sticking them in a Studio, I was checking out Manlius pickups, they have a good reputation and they make them in the format I want.
SouthpawGuy Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I have both a Studio mahogany and a Studio Custom. Can't say there is a radically different tone between them, they do have different pickups though. The mahogany has SD '59s. I have those same pickups in a couple of Heritage guitars, a semi hollow 535 and a full hollow 575 so I'm fairly used to their tone. The Custom has a Wolfetone Marshallhead and a Skatterbrane Yingbrane in the neck and does sound brighter, how much of that is due to the pickups I don't know. Pics ... I find I'm playing the mahogany more than the Custom lately.
hamerhead Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I got that 'hog for a pittance', and it's pretty nice (few dingers here and there). G Man hit it on the head - it's warmer than a Studio Custom I had, but plenty of rip to it. I need to play it more......Manlius makes great pickups.Southpaw Guy - those are 2 awesome guitars.

I went out of my way to explain that it wasn't meant to be apples to apples. My point was just that the oft-spouted axiom that an all mahogany dual humbucker guitar will be warm and midrangey compared to a maple topped one isn't always so.
Jackass Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 SouthpawGuy, did you by your lefties from a dealer in Cincinnati(Did I spell that right?)? DHR maybe? Bm
cmatthes Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I want one with a single bridge humbucker.Don't know why...
cmatthes Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 You know it! But I'd probably try to throw somebody for a loop and put a Standard headstock on there... I may have to have you get out your fingerpaints and see what you can work up for me.
bubs_42 Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I want one with a single bridge humbucker.Don't know why...I want one with P90s So I can convert it to a Sustainblock and a Triplecoil. I know where the perfect one is but he wont let it go. DAMN!!

Jackass Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Studio mah. with a Standard headstock. How about asking Newman60 to do tumbling booms in both directions so they look like they are running over each other.Bm
