The 1st or the 2nd?

Looking inside the access door, you can see the little bump on the sidewall (Tailpiece support?) and the carved area on the Mahogany back.  Removing the bridge pickup, you see the carved block just inside well in line to support the bridge and, assuming here, the tailpiece.

The block is definitely there as shown in your pics.  Whether it's the solid or carved out version, I can't say.  Perhaps one of the old team can pipe in on this one. 🙂

Bump # 9...

I wonder where pirateflynn's ended up. That was a real stunner, natural, B&C, and with the tailpiece in a normal spot rather than far away from the bridge like on most Pros. Can't even find a pic of it anymore.

Here's a update that might be of interest to some of you who have chimed in on my quest for a maple topped Newport Pro.

I, through my search for the guitar, came across the fellow who acquired the Newport that burningyen mentioned in his post.

The guitar that pirateflynn once owned ended up here in the NW.

The guy has since passed it along to someone else and from there, well, who knows....

Anyway, I just thought I'd pass along the history of that particular Newport Pro....

Here's a photo of the guitar and so, if anyone here might know its current location, maybe you could reach out as it is almost exactly what I had in my mind...

Thanks again, Tim.

I think there’s only one with the requested tailpiece position, so until that one turns back up…

Thanks Hbom for the heads-up on the BE maple Newport on Reverb.

It ticked most of the boxes for me as it had a nice full '59 neck profile and that really nice birds eye top....

Unfortunately, by the time I saw your message and asked the seller for some specific details, it had sold.....

So, I will continue my quest....

Thanks again.

I was thinking about getting a newport..  but whenever I get an electric guitar with a bigger body than a typical les paul or tele..  I end up not playing it that much...   therefore my search is off..

free bump for you

Oddly enough, the Newport isn’t a Large body, or even much bigger than a Les Paul shape.  A 335 honestly dwarfs it.

I guess I need to look about the size of the body...  I read a guy complaining about how big it was.....  time to google

An Artist/Studio (Les Paul for that matter) have a bout of about 13".

The Newport (and I *think* the Talladega) have a bout of about 14".

If I recall correctly, the 335, et.al. have a bout of about 16", but I'm not sure about that...

This all makes a difference in sound, but also in comfort.

Edit to add - Google shows the 335 at 16.5".

veatch is correct on the different body sizes.

I, personally, like the slightly bigger body on the Newport, over an LP.

Another thing to consider, with a Newport, is its weight.

The spruce topped Newport is nice and light although, I can't comment on a maple topped one as I've never had the chance to play one, yet...

The Newport is much lighter than almost any LP and it's also a bit lighter than any 335 I've owned, thus, making it easy on one's back when played for extended sessions.

Truth!   Very comfy. Not unwieldy at all.
