Hartke input jack? **UPDATE** Hartke responds!

Question

Posted (edited)

I just got a Hartke HA1400. The input jack was loose (plastic crap), and of course I cracked it trying to tighten it up. Pulled the thing apart and somebody  - either Dave's or the guy who traded it - had 'fixed' it previously by gluing it back together.

Fixing it will be easy enough if I can find the correct replacement jack. I haven't heard back from Hartke yet, and while Amplified Parts was very helpful, they didn't have an exact match.

Having plastic crap mounted directly to the board SUCKS. I could possibly find room and use a real jack and jumper wires. I could also take the effects loop input jack and transplant it, but putting it back together the right way, with the right parts, is preferred.

It's a great little amp and was pretty cheap. Do any of you know where I can find that confounded bridge...er..I mean, jack??

THANK YOU!

Looks like a standard PCB mounted TRS connector.

I looked it up and couldn't find a part #, but you could first contact Hartke, then try parts suppliers like: www.mouser.com  www.digikey.com  www.newark.com  www.onlinecomponents.com

You'll need to measure the contact spacing and shell dimensions as well as which contact goes to which tab.

Honestly, if it was me, I'd just grab a regular jack and mount it to the chassis and solder jumper wires to it... easy enough to determine what wires go where...

Good luck 👍

Haven't heard anything from Hartke yet, but decided the go the jumper wire route. I oblonged the mounting hole a little to gain some clearance from the circuit board and slapped in a Switchcraft jack from my parts pin. IT WORKS!!  And it's rock solid (unlike the rest of that plastic stuff).

I took my bass player and drummer to Dave's in Sun Prairie. We were trying out used bass amps and the Hartke wouldn't work. The saleskid was trying this and that, so I says "How much as it sits?"

He says, "$20".

I said "Sold!" so fast it scared Bob the drummer.

Saleskid keeps futzin' with it, looks at the back and discovers someone had unplugged the speaker. Works fine now! Damn, so close....

Still, at $125 I think I did alright. The little thing kranks, is in otherwise really good condition, and even sounds good with a guitar thru it. Plus I woulda felt guilty if I only paid $20 for it and found it was just the speaker being unplugged.

I can't believe I've grown a conscience in my old age.....

I have an Hartke HD 75.  Great sounding bass amp.  I wish the controls were on the front like that one.

I'm pretty surprised at how active/reactive the EQ is on it. There's a bunch of sounds in those 4 knobs, and it's punchy as hell.

And THANKS EVERYBODY for pointing me in the right direction(s). I am by no means an amp repairman and sometimes scare myself with shit I'm about to try. It's nice to get lucky every once in awhile.

Just heard back from Hartke:

Good day
Please send me your name address , I will send you the jack for free.

Hartke

Great customer service! Especially on a used piece of gear.

So had I been a little more patient I could have saved a bit of a headache, and I can always swap in the new correct jack. But the fix is solid as is so I'm not gonna mess with it for now.

If you have one of those solder removal tools, my old one has what looks like a turkey baster bulb on it, one of those makes removing the old jack from the pcb pretty easy, worth the investment even if you rarely use it

I bought one of these from Circuit Specialists

900-004.webp

Well worth the money as I can one-hand the iron and just click the button to desolder.

No way. Not me. I just heat shit up and yank. Then add globs of solder to get 'er back together.

Actually I was lucky - it came apart pretty cleanly and went back together better than expected.

Yup, a Soldapullt.  I use those when desoldering anything that isn't a trace on a circuit board. Nice and fast.  For delicate circuits you can use these: https://www.chemtronics.com/soder-wick-lead-free

Nothing to add other than a chuckle, remembering my English bass buddy who refers to this brand as Horrible American Rubbish That Keeps Exploding.

Well, if Samson is still around, and if they still own Hartke......

We always had a saying about Samson ( and any brands they own).

Q: How do you make the sound system sound better?

A: Rip out the Samson products.

Hey! Shut up, you guys! I didn't know it was shit when I bought it. Thanks - now I'm going to have a complex.

Plus, it's just for drums. Those guys can't hear anyways.

So not true.

They can hear, they just don't listen.
