Guest galejt Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 http://travisdickersondownloads.com/mp3/Nottingham_Lace.mp3I'd say I didn't like metal, but then I wouldn't like this...and I do.BucketHeadLandEdited to add: I'm not a big fan of metal. This is just very well done. Also the absurdity of it all is just plain (in my best Pythonish exclamatory voice) super.

Is there ANYTHING involving even the slightest semblance of advanced technical skill that you like? And no, Margo mumbling the words to "Sweet Jane" as if she just ingested an entire bottle of Valiums doesn't count.

Nels Cline...Chet Atkins...if you mean guys like Vai and Satriani and what not, then no I don't... I may not know certain players' names , but I think jazz players have technique galore and I enjoy listening to them..Advanced technical skill does not equate to good music, especially if it mean I have to listen to 13 minutes of soloing...even blues cats I get sick of at times and I really like SRV, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, etc..but these "tech guys" turn me off..
MCChris Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Nels Cline... Another question ...will there ever be a thread in which you WON'T mention this guy?
copper blue Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 as soon as I don't have to hear about AC/DC, KI$$ or Van Halen....Sorry..but this guy is a monster..to me he's the Ed Viesturs of great playing right now..
MCChris Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 as soon as I don't have to hear about AC/DC, KI$$ or Van Halen.... Good luck on a guitar board.
Kilroy is all about... Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 More about ME and 'back in the day' stories: late 90 or early '91, the Deli Creeps were a relatively novel and interesting band for the Norcal/bay area scene. I recall seeing Buckethead in this band just before they hit the 'we quit' scene. I'd love to hear the discourse between buckethead, tommy stinson, brain, and axl rose following that grammy experience or new year's eve gig.... whenever guns'n'rose did that 'premiere' television performance.slash and izzy were the real GUNS!KILROY posts.

Hey Kilroy, I saw the Deli Creeps in San Jose, CA at the Cactus Club about 10 years ago. Hilarious band w/ Buckethead, the chicken shredder. I understand that guy took lessons w/ Paul Gilbert. I think his music is funny and you can't take it too seriously.I can imagine the whole scenario of the new "Guns 'N' Roses" w/ Axl yelling at everyone. Yes, Slash, Izzy, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum is the real Guns 'N' Roses. I'm going to go see Velvet Revolver tomorrow in San Francisco, CA at the Civic Center. Anybody in the northern California going? Guitar George
Kilroy is all about... Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 VR played reno last nite, but i was a poser' for a free joe satriani ticket, which never showed up. I'm getting very picking in my 40 something concert goings and on. If you live in Norcal, as does a few others, then can or should we put together a northern california HFC jam? I'm four hours of driving from reno into the bay area....are you game? any other players? there is 'hamstd' and a few others...in norcal, so let's do it. kilroy sends...
serial Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Tommy Stinson is and will always be 'Mats. Never GnR.Sorum, Duff, Slash and Izzy and ok, that singer dude with the bandana... what'sisname?
Brownsound Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Its interesting these quibblings over styles and musical talent/tech ability. I have listened to some really incredible Jazz players that had insane technique and skill, but I wouldnt go out of my way to listen to them...its just not my bag... Satriani is good and some of his stuff is tasty. I wouldnt call it wankery. Its unfortunate that some people wont admit technical mastery and call it crap because they dont like the music. I really dont enjoy listening to Zappa but man, that guy had ability pouring from him. Cut to todays hard rock/metal. I have heard very little technical mastery OR musical talent. Im talking about the universal litmus for musical ability. A wall of drop D noise with some crack head screaming into a mike takes little or no ability....or talent. Its much like farting the alphabet, a neat little trick but not a talent...!
Jason01 Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Hey copper, if you don't like the music fine, to each his own. To call it "soulless wankery" is pretty much asking for people to flame you. I happen to like that album alot, how about leave those kind of opinions to yourself and I'll stay away from badmouthing all that alternative stuff?
BCR Greg Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Soulfull wankery is so 15 minutes ago, but soulless wankery will always have room in my life.
mattb Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 I've been into buckethead since I was a punk H.S. kid. I think its fascinating to listen to.
tombo Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Its interesting these quibblings over styles and musical talent/tech ability. I have listened to some really incredible Jazz players that had insane technique and skill, but I wouldnt go out of my way to listen to them...its just not my bag... I find it interesting too. I just surfed over to the CD Now site and took a listen to Nels Cline. I picked out some of the CDs by random and listened to the cuts. So.......I'm thinkin, "jeez, if I ever need music to sleep to, that'd be it." I absolutely LOVE Mike Stern's stuff and Bill Frisell, but I know others who fall to sleep to their music. Bill Frisell gets pretty deep sometimes and Stern has both lead AND RHYTHM chops to die for, but....there's no accounting for tastes I guess. I think Satch's Crystal Planet is one of his best! It's my second favorite Satch disc behind the '95 self titled CD. In particular, the cuts "Time", "Rasberry Jam Delta-V" and "Love Thing" stand out. Living in Japan, the capital of "guitar dudes who worship wank masters", we are exposed to an insane amount of Northern European neo-classical wankery and even among that "genre" if I may call it that, there are about one or two that I can stand listening to; Mattias IA Ecklund being one of them. Hearing "meedly meedly meedly meedly --waaaaaaaaaaang-- meedly meedly meedly" isn't music, it's just guys who wank...uh...better than me, but wanking nevertheless. Copper, if you're talking "monsters" I'll throw out a my list (by no means complete) who are deserving of the status: Junior Brown Wayne Krantz Duke Levine Redd Volkaert Avi Bortnick (Sco's rhythm player) Brad Paisley David Grissom Leni Stern (Mike's wife) Carl Verheyen Gary Moore Jimi John Sykes Bill Frisell Scott Henderson Angus & Malcom Wes Montgomery Albert Lee Robben Ford Scotty Anderson Paul Jackson Jr. Sonny Landreth Duke Robillard Adrian Belew Michael Landau Muddy The Three Kings - Albert, B.B. & Freddie and Joe Satriani - take away all the "image" and he can still play like a motherplucker. Period. and many too numerous to name. Name a genre, they each have their monsters.
Cheap Chick Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Meeedly meeeee-ow! Cat fight! Yeah!!! Satriani sucks Teslacles!
copper blue Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 souless wankery yes..when you compare his music to Townes Van Zandt, Elliot Smith, Christian Kjellvander, and Dylan, yes...yes and double yes..But you guys can listen to whatever you like...I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you..
BCR Greg Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Dylan pioneered two handed tapping, Eddie VH stole it from him.Christian Kjellvander plays Paul Stanley in a KISS tribute band.
copper blue Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 is this Bizarro world you live in, nice? maybe I'll come for a visit...
Brooks Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 my take on shred type players is that they're alot of fun to watch live. i love watching someone who has mastered their instrument, even if they go over the top (like yngwie). but, most of the shred stuff i've heard doesn't stand up to repeated listening, at least to me. its the same w/ bluegrass; i'll enjoy watching a live set of quality BG music, yet the cd's bore me as much as shred. that said, i do have a few scott henderson/andy timmons/kotzen & howe/holdsworth tunes in rotation on my 200 cd player. i used to love vai & satch in the 80's, but i never replaced their albums w/ cd's (kinda like judas priest and iron maiden).i like scofields stuff from the last 10 years. he's got chops, but he doesn't overdo it. its his jazzy phrasing that hooks me, along w/ the funky grooves. charlie hunter and will bernard, too. i like good players, esp for instrumental music. but alot of my fave rock music (sabs, zep, CCR, etc) is kinda lame compared to jazz and shred stuff, at least chops wise. but i'm feelin' it.
MCChris Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 But you guys can listen to whatever you like...I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you.. Of course you do. But when you go OUT OF YOUR WAY to rail against shred music (which isn't my thing either; I feel the same way about it as Brooks does) you can and should expect to be called out on it.You don't like shred. We get it. So why chime in on this thread unless you wanted to stir something up? Maybe that's exactly what you wanted to do; hell, I do it all the time myself. Just don't go getting all defensive when someone reacts. After all, isn't that what you wanted? A reaction? Well done, sir ... you got it.Now then. What's the REAL reason you hate shred/hair metal? Are you jealous that you didn't/don't have the work ethic/talent to achieve that level of skill? Did the people who threw you in lockers and kicked your ass in high school listen to hair metal? Does the sight of men dressed up as women cause a tingling in your loins that you're not comfortable with?Honestly ... WHAT THE FUCK IS IT?

Hey kilroy, I'm sorry you didn't get to go to the Velvet Revolver show in Reno. Now if you're talking about getting together and jam, I know a place where all of us northern California Hamer Fan Club members can meet. We can jam at Art & Rhonda's Jam Night at the St. James Gate in Belmont. You guys know where Belmont is? They have a musician's jam night every Thursday night from 9:30p to 1:30am. You guys are all welcome to come hang out there, bring your cool Hamer USA guitars and jam. If anyone is interested in meeting up, e-mail me!! It's the invasion of the Hamer USA persuasion at Art & Rhonda's Jam Night!! Who wants to go? Guitar George
