6string Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Hello all, first post here. I just purchased my first Hamer, it's a 1996 USA Studio Goldtop model, and I have a question about the neck/body joint on these. I bought the guitar from Ebay so I didn't have the opportunity to see it before buying, and the seller didn't mention this at all. The neck pocket has what appears to be either excess glue under the finish, or, the finish itself is coming away from the wood in that area. It doesn't show well in the photos, but it encompasses the whole neck/body joint, not just adjacent to the binding. My concern is that it's the latter and due to stress on a weak joint. The guitar seems to be fine though, and with no cracks, only the milky appearance of the finish there, I can't find anything that makes it appear to be coming apart. Does anyone know if this is normal with these guitars? I have a number of guitars and have never seen this before. Thanks for your help.
kizanski Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 It's not a weak neck joint (such a thing does not exist in the Hamer World - seriously). It's "Hameritis."Search the board for that word. It will explain it in depth.Welcome!
DEMENTED Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 that's it..a discoloration in the clearcoat around the joint. was somewhat common, no longer an issue on Hamers.
serial Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Absolutely NO structural issues whatsoever-that is PURELY cosmetic. Not "dishonest" for a seller, particularly one familiar with Hamers, to overlook that. Hamer neck joints are incredibly stable-they're huge! There was a post with a photo from one of the factory tours where they have a Hamer neck joint compared to a Les Paul joint. The LP tenon looks like a toothpick! For the record, I'm a Les Paul fan.
6string Posted February 24, 2007 Author Posted February 24, 2007 Thanks for the replies. I'm quite relieved to hear it's not structural. I'm loving the guitar and hated the thought of parting with it/dealing with an Ebay return issue. I'll look up the posts you folks mentioned. I play primarily Gibson guitars with a few others in the mix, and had never seen anything like this. Thanks again.

Hamer's lifetime guarantee would have taken care of it if you would have been the original owner of the guitar. But if you really want it fixed a good luthier can do it. It's only cosmetical, so for most players its not a big issue.
serial Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 If it really continues to bother you, BCRGreg has a great fix for it to make it go away.
DavidE Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Yup, too common on 90's Hamers and I think a few have complained about it on newer ones as well. Cosmetic only.
Gabe Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 My 2002 USA Hamer GoldTop has exactly the same "problem". But it is not really a problem. It is proof that it is a real USA Hamer guitar, solid as a rock. Gabe
Kurt L Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Two of my faves have Hameritis - enjoy the guitar and don't give it a second thought.Hell, I LOVE Hameritis... I got my Artist Custom for $650 because of it.
Disturber Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Is this a lacquer or poly finish? Some kind of mix I think. Hamer has a name for it, but I can't remember what they call it.

Dat be "Urelaq", I believe. Some sort of polyurethane concoction. Stike will chime in soon with the molecular composition.
