marshal Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I recently bought BubbaVO's 3 Hole Duotone and it does play absolutly great, just a bit small for me so I went with a Gibson es347. I paid $1000 for this and it has Gregs (BCR Music) mods to it with Rio Grande pups. You can see pics of it on BubbaVO' s post on this site, since I do not know how to post pics here.I would like to get 1k plus shipping.SOLD
BubbaVO Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 It is a really nice guitar. The only reason I ended up selling it is because I had to pay for a Talladega. The Rio Grandes really sing. I miss it. Someone should pick it up to keep it in the HFC family.
santellavision Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Do you know what the plugged-up hole on the top was for? Coil-splitter?
BCR Greg Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Acoustic/both/electric switch. Useless, since it just opens the connection, like unplugging the cable.
holLoWskull Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Acoustic/both/electric switch. Useless, since it just opens the connection, like unplugging the cable. Not trying to get off the topic of a nice USA duotone being up for sale, but why do you consider the factory switch's functionality useless? Granted it's one more thing that needs to be replaced after lots of use (and I admit they do eventually wear out and cause a nice buzz throught the PA), but how else do you go between electric>amp full off/on and piezo>PA full off/on quickly? Seems if you didn't have that toggle you'd have to adjust the volume knob for the electric side and the volume knob for the piezo at the same time (which seems like it could be tricky on stage if you're in mid-riff and only have one free hand) to get that desired effect? Otherwise it seems you'd just have varying degrees of an electric/piezo mix but never each one seperate? If you have the time, please help this poor confused soul to understand, even if you just want to PM or e-mail me so as not to hijack the thread anymore than I already did. As an apology to Marshal for getting off topic a bit, here's a bump to the for sale thread as well

As an apology to Marshal for getting off topic a bit, here's a bump to the for sale thread as well The 3 hole DT has 2 different jacks providing the outgoing signal to the "electric" amp and the "acoustic" amp/PA system. Assuming one has the ability to turn the "acoustic" amplification on and off there's no problem with juggling between the two volume controls as suggested above. I think there's plenty of gear out there that can help manage that. And that's why Greg, displaying a certain amount of sense earned while scraping his knuckles figuring out the electronics schemes of old Jaguars (LUCAS I believe), determined correctly that the additional switch wasn't necessary. My kids would get puzzled looks on their faces when I'd put the electric and acoustic amp on opposite sides of the room and have them both going at the same time. I can only imagine that gigging it by someone approaching a competent skill would produce a "how'd you do that" look in his audience.
BCR Greg Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 (wipes blood from knuckles)Ah, Lucas...the Prince of Darkness.Having used a Duotone as my main gigging guitar for a few centuries, I can tell you that judicious use of the volume controls gives you all the switching you need, and no *BANG* through the PA as when you hit that silly switch(you should hear that through a 200,000 watt outdoor arena PA. It's like a cannon, and the Front OF House guy gets this certain shade of red when it happens......)
DavidE Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 I haven't played out with my piezo equipped guitars for a while, but when I did, I ran a stereo cable from the guitar to a Fishman Powerblend pedal. The pedal acted as a volume control to bring the piezo sound in and out of the mix. A much better option to me than hitting a switch on the guitar. I always leave that switch in the "both" position, but then again I never run the piezo to the guitar amp.
serial Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 That three way switch was always the Achilles heel of the three hole Duotone. Not only did I usually get the loud "pop" when switching, but also a lot of what sounded like non-shielded hum from one side or the other. That happened with both Duotones I had, even though in all other respects, they were close to perfect guitars. I still miss my green one and had I kept it, Greg would have had it on his bench for that mod no question.
BCR Greg Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 The other part of that mod is isolating the grounds for the two systems. That gets rid of the factory hum.
Don Brown Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 I must have an older mod because I have the seperate outs but still have the 3 way switch.I guess a trip out east is in order to get the mod mod don
geoff_hartwell Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 $1000 is a great price for this guitar. I've had those 3-ways disconnected by the factory on each of my older Duotones, and completely omitted from the design on my new ones- as well as switching the pu selector to a normal size one, not the half-buried kind. First of all, the *pop* switching issue is a big one. Sounds WAY better to use the knobs in subtle balancing increments. Takes about a millisecond to roll either up or down. But the kicker for me was that I would go into a big solo, go for the pu selector switch, and get the acoustic/electric selector instead. Nothing like going for the BIG NOTE and having your balls cut off in front of a lot of people. That'll knock you down a few pegs Or you could just blame the monitor guy (ouch). Seriously, this is a great price for a great guitar.

belikerick Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Dumb Question - does the guitar still use the two separate output jacks? I'm trying to picture how the blender mod works with seperate outputs and can't - d'oh! So in essence, if I wanted to send the piezo signal to the PA and plug the hums into an amp will that work with this mod?Sal - I'm interested in this guitar PM sent
