MTM105 Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Peavey Deuce combo, circa 1976. Workhorse. It's like they put lead weights into the reverb section. It was the go-to Skynyrd Amp, during the mega-concert hey day.But I guess, quality PA systems have replaced the legendary Walls of Cabs. Van Halen comes to mind. Some were probably just speakerless cabs. You can probably get a Deuce with Black Widows for under $300.
silentman Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 A mesa mark IV combo is pretty damn heavy, especially with an EV speaker
ZR Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 MTM105,What does your name mean? You should probably change it to PvLuva! ; )No offense by that, whatever makes music for ya is all that matters but.... I think you may actually be Hartley Peavey!Hey, I've had my share of Pv amps; a Classic VT and VTX, Classic 50/50 power amp etc. Can't say I really miss them though. The power amp was a winner though.I had a USA Destiny (think Hamer CHap-like). Nice sounding guitar, some finish problems but still nice. I played a friend's Falcon that was really nice. Those Generation guitars looked nice. Have you played many other all-tube amps? Or, any of PV more recent offerings?
Thundernotes Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Actually, the Mace had 6 output tubes and was louder and heavier. I owned a Deuce for about 15 years. I didn't really care for the solid-state preamp section in a beefy tube amp. Like putting a V6 in a Corvette.

So I bought the Mace, put it on a V-4 cabinet, and thought I was a Rock Star!

I think you may actually be Hartley Peavey!Have you played many other all-tube amps? Or, any of PV more recent offerings?I know zero about 5150 or anything new. I live in a vacuum. There is a beautiful Peavey showroom at Sound Check studios in Nashville. I hang around, bring my 5 yr old to look cute, and haven't been granted access. Friendly staff, though.I just heard Randy Rhodes died in a plane crash?? who was flying it? Ozzy?actually my name is Wolfgang and I am wondering what happened to my Dad's contract????I don't undertand how Marshall Plexis are in the stratosphere price range, and only 10 years later, Skynyrd recorded One More From the Road with the Deuces (and Mace), but instead of price appreciation, the da#$ thing depriciates and goes for less than $200 at your local pawn shop, instead of $2,000. It is a BEAST of an amp, IMO, and can withstand a nuclear stike.Skynyrd marketed the Amp. Hartley had an opportunity to take it to the next level, and it wasn't until EVH that Peavey became competive again, with the likes of Marshall and Mesa.
princeofdarkness56 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 I remember back in the day my buddy and I playing with his duece. Craked his parents bay window.
Willie G. Moseley Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Erstwhile .38 Special lead guitarist Jeff Carlisi used Mace heads, and still does. One cool thing about those is the built-in phase shifter. I use Peavey guitar heads for amplifying my basses and have done so for decades. Ca. '86 it was a Mace head, it done fine. Older Peavey amps are the vinyl-floor pickup trucks of amplication.
Dutchman Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 My Mace was without a doubt the loudest amp I ever owned, Hiwatts included. To be honest I never really liked the Mace that much, it was loud but it lacked the tones I later found the the Mark series Boogies.Skynyrd found a way to make them sound good, but I wasn't able to run them wide open like they did.
