chap Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Hey Everyone, Quick question, I don't keep my eye out for Specials but this one caught my eye because it looks awesome and price seems good but I'm not sure. It's a 1993 Hamer Studio USA, s/n 334863 Cherry burst, tiger striped, with case asking $550 cdn. That seems like a good deal but when I'm searching the web / ebay etc.. I'm seeing prices for USA Specials as low as $250 USD (which doesn't sound right) all the way up to $1250+ USD. Its not this one but looks exactly like this:http://kizanski.com/SpecialFM.html
chap Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 Great price.Yea I thought so too. But in a way that's why I'm skeptical ... I'm usually the one getting ripped off.
BubbaVO Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Who knows? I'm surprised to find some sellers don't check prices for gear on ebay before posting theirs and then completely low ball themselves. Pricing for a quick sale is one thing, pricing due to ignorance is another.
DaveL Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 sounds great pricewise, just make sure you ask the right questions. Are there any breaks in the finish? is the neck joint ok? original parts?etc... you also may want to insist on a couple pics...
Armitage Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Looks great, but if the guy says he's in Manchester... it's a scam. There's a guy on Kizanski selling great stuff, at just slightly low prices... then he says he's in Manchester on business, but will do the deal anyway... he buys and sells... but you never get the item, or the money. I heard two different guys at work talking about him, then my partners son almost got screwed, then I bumped into him advertising a EVH Charvel for a grand.
JGale Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Kizanski is the screen nom de plume of an HFC member and former moderator. That website is a photographic journey of his travels though Hamer land.$550cdn seems low (and a great price) for that instrument. Are we not almost even on exchange rates with USD?
chap Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 It's weird that Hamers don't sell here in Vancouver. I tried to sell two Chaparral's locally a few years ago for $400 a piece with no takers. The only catch was that I wanted the buyer to buy both ... I figure that's the only way for me to get rid of that piece of shit black one is to sell it along side a good one. Then I got onto this message forum and found out that I wasn't crazy for owning three of the exact same instruments.
ajoso Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Grat price - I wouldn't think twice about this one. Also, we don't see that many Hamers up in Canada (at least not around these parts) - so it's not like you'll find another one locally any time soon.FWIW I got my '93 USA Studio P-90 with (crappy) case for $500 cdn - and that was in '96 or '97!
Punkavenger Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Thats a great price ... if it's in super good cond. it's probably worth $800 USDIt might have a skinny neck however ... if thats something that concerns you then you would want to be clear on that point
crunchee Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 sounds great pricewise, just make sure you ask the right questions. Are there any breaks in the finish? is the neck joint ok? original parts?etc... you also may want to insist on a couple pics...+1. This sounds like a really low price, I wouldn't jump on it without 'due diligence'. Current bank rates on currency are roughly US $1.00 = Can $ 1.18. Up until a few months ago, it was about dead even!
chap Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 Yea I picked up a white Chaparral guitar when the dollar was at par there on ebay. I keep thinking about this black '81 Vector that someone was selling on ebay for $450 that no one bid on (super worn out and broken headstock). I keep hoping this guy will re-post but now the $CDN is roughly $.20 to the USD so ... kids to feed etc... Hey thanks to everyone for the information, I ended up picking up this guitar. It's the real thing ... I'm so happy to add my fourth Hamer to my humble collection! I'll post some pics tomorrow, have to replace a missing knob (how the heck do knobs go missing??)Yea so this thing is in pretty good shape. Odd knick and dent here and there, some fret wear that I didn't even notice when I checked it before buying, buckle rash (the guy plays it LOW on the belt!). The fretboard and neck will take getting used to as I'm really worn in with the Chaparrals. But I really like the ... I don't know how to say it... like this is like the Toyota Corolla of Hamer. It's cheap and good quality - no frills and gimmicks. Sounds great, feels solid, looks awesome!
marcnorth Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 That's a good price on a Special FM. I sold one just like it for $550 a few years back, (as matter of fact it may have been the same guitar) I haven't seen one go for that low in a while though.
