JohnnyB Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Hey, glad you asked! As it happens, tonight I'm playing in my first paying gig in [gasp] 28 years! Since I'm 56 that's literally half a lifetime ago, when I played drums in the pit band for the very first production of Ain't Misbehavin' after being released from the exclusive Broadway run. I've played out a few times in the ensuing years--guitar at a couple of jams ten years ago and drums for swing and jazz at a couple of Senior Swing dances. This is my second public performance on bass and the first for pay. (band website)We also have some things working for later in June and probably July.

JohnnyB Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Hey, glad you asked! As it happens, tonight I'm playing in my first paying gig in [gasp] 28 years! Since I'm 56 that's literally half a lifetime ago...We're gonna need a full report...have fun! Thanks for the interest. The biggest thing about the gig was probably that we were able to do it on short notice. A coworker of the bandleader had scheduled a jazz band to provide music for a dinner fundraiser. They canceled at the last minute and we were able to step in. So we had some good will coming into it. The fundraiser was at a church and was for a campus ministry organization that has sites at UW and several of the local community colleges. The people were really nice, the stage was spacious, and they invited us to eat the food they'd prepared for the dinner as long as we finished in time to play while the rest of them ate. Food was great--professionally done barbecue chicken, basmati rice, spinach salad with feta cheese and raspberry dressing. Strawberry-topped New York cheesecake for dessert. We put together a songlist of our more "dinnery" music and made sure we left out the ones that have ass, shit, or fuck somewhere in the lyrics. We seemed to go over well, and I felt like I did pretty well considering we do 95% original music with quirky changes and repeats that change depending on where they are in the song. I managed to nail almost all these quirky changes except one. We could have used a wedge monitor; we could only hear our vocals from the house PA speakers, but the guitarist's amp, the drums, and my bass amp made up the back line so were were able to work through it.Between that and that I sometimes get musical ideas for which I lack the skill to play, I've resolved to practice longer and more often. The gig helped show me what I need to work on.
